Highlights: First TV to run Fire TV OS, user experience

After Motorola and Nokia partnered with Flipkart to manufacture and sell their smart TVs online, Onida too has joined the trend and launched a TV in partnership with Amazon.

The Onida Smart LED TV- Fire TV Edition comes in 32 inches and 43 inches and here, we review the former, priced at Rs 12,999.

The idea behind the TV is simple: to integrate Amazon’s popular Fire TV operating system (OS) into a TV at a nominal price.

The OS gets support for Live TV, the option to select different HDMI or USB inputs and it also comes with a media player to watch content from a thumb drive.
The TV comes with 16 watt speakers with Dolby Audio and DTS TruSurround, giving audio quality sufficient for a medium-sized room.

The TV comes with all primary streaming services, including YouTube. Apart from this, the Fire TV OS is rich in native app support with a dedicated browser, music services, Alexa and even an app store.

The TV’s hardware, however, is basic. The display panel is a high definition LED with 60 Hz refresh rate, which gets the job done. Viewing angles are satisfactory and image quality is also fine, considering the price.

The TV comes with 16 watt speakers with Dolby Audio and DTS TruSurround, giving audio quality sufficient for a medium-sized room. Connectivity options include 3x HDMI ports, USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an Ethernet port.

The TV has a Bluetooth remote that allows users to control devices enabled with Consumer Electronics Control or CEC. It has hotkeys for primary over the top services and a voice button that can wake up Alexa to search for anything on the TV such as shows, movies or videos or to control supported smart home devices.

Overall, the TV does stand out from the crowd since it offers a user experience much better than any Android TV at this price point.
