OnePlus 2 launch: 10 things you need to know
The launch of OnePlus 2 is just round the corner, but the company has revealed quite a bit about the upcoming smartphone already in order to keep the buzz going.

Successor to the OnePlus One, the new model will have many upgrades, like a bigger battery, faster processor, new sensors etc. In fact, OnePlus calls its upcoming smartphone the ' 2016 flagship killer' and says it competes with next year's smartphones, not this year's.

Here's a round-up of the 10 things you need to know about OnePlus 2 smartphone:

Fingerprint sensor

OnePlus has said that the upcoming smartphone will feature a fingerprint sensor that is faster than Apple’s TouchID system.

This fingerprint scanner can store up to five fingerprints for authentication. However, the company has not given any information if the scanner will have any other unique functions.

On the other hand, the company has also confirmed that OnePlus 2 will not have an integrated heart rate monitor.

4GB RAM

In a Reddit AMAA session, the OnePlus team revealed that its upcoming smartphone will have 4GB of RAM.

This will make it one of the very few smartphones in the market to offer such an amount of memory.

The processor

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has announced that the company will use Qualcomm’s high-end octa-core Snapdragon 810 chipset in the upcoming smartphone.

Snapdragon 810 is based on 64-bit CPU architecture that coupled with the phone’s 4GB RAM, will be able to make use of 64-bit apps that are expected to arrive in sometime.

Though Snapdragon 810 suffers from overheating issues, OnePlus is using the v2.1 processor that it says will make the upcoming phone “cooler than ever.”

Additionally, the company is using thermal gel and graphite to ensure that the heat generated from the processors is evenly dissipated.

Updated design

OnePlus 2 images leaked by Chinese regulatory authority TENNA show that the phone’s design is getting a small update compared to the first model.

The most noticeable change in the front is a hardware Home button that will house the fingerprint sensor.

In the images, OnePlus 2’s body is clad in a metallic frame, which replaces the plastic frame of OnePlus One. The rear panel is pretty similar, sporting the sandstone finish, but below the camera sensor is a laser-focus setup that was not present in the predecessor.

On Reddit, the company also revealed that OnePlus 2 will be smaller in size compared to its predecessor.

Software

OnePlus and Cyanogen hit a rough patch last year and eventually ended their partnership agreement. Therefore, OnePlus 2 will run only on Oxygen OS operating system, which OnePlus has built in-house.

This OS version will be based on Android Lollipop and will have features that won't come to other smartphones till the release of Android M.

Battery capacity

OnePlus 2 will have a 3,300mAh battery that is approximately 10% bigger than the 3,100mAh battery of the original model.

As OnePlus One already delivers over a day of battery life, it is widely expected that the successor will last a little longer on one charge.

New USB connector

While announcing Android M, Google said it is replacing the microUSB connector with the new USB Type C connector. This connector is backwards compatible, like Apple’s Lightning adapter.

In a blog, co-founder Pei also said that it has made improvements to the USB Type C that will be exclusive to OnePlus products.

While OnePlus One does not support fast-charging, it is said that OnePlus 2 is likely to support this technology.

Camera gets an upgrade

Though OnePlus has not announced this, leaked images show that its next flagship smartphone will have a 13MP rear camera as well as a dual-LED flash.

As mentioned earlier, the smartphone will make use of laser-focus camera technology to focus on the object faster and make the camera quicker to use.

The company’s representatives also said that the smartphone has “a bunch of things that we believe will set the OnePlus 2 apart, but we’ll leave the details for the launch.”

Dual-sim support

Unlike its predecessor, OnePlus 2 will come in dual-sim variant, which will help it compete better against other Chinese products in its price segment.

It will also support more bands compared to last year’s model. Below are the telecom bands that the US and Europe versions of the smartphone will be compatible with:

US:

GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/8FDD-LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/7/8/12/17

Europe:
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/5/8 FDD-LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Price and invite system

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has revealed that the upcoming smartphone has been priced under $450, but said the company will announce the official price on the launch day, July 27. This is a rather big jump from the $299 price tag of OnePlus One.

The company will still be using its invite-only strategy for OnePlus 2 sales, but has made the process a little simpler. Instead of seeking those who already have a OnePlus 2 invite or participating in social media promotions to win an invite themselves, users can submit their email IDs on the company’s website. OnePlus will email them the invite once the existing demand is exhausted.

Additionally, the company has said that OnePlus inventory will be 30-50 times larger for OnePlus 2, meaning that most users will be able to get their hands on an invite easily.

1/6
Text: Anupam Saxena, TOI Tech

Xiaomi has introduced its 2014 flagship smartphone, Mi 4, in the Indian market.

The phone is priced around Rs 20,000, bringing high-end hardware specifications to the mid-range segment, similar to the Mi 3 smartphone that it launched in July.

However, the landscape has changed radically and surprisingly, consumers have other options to choose from.

Xiaomi pitted the phone against these and other high-end offerings and even showcased a related slide at a launch event in New Delhi.

One name that appears to one up the Mi 4, at least in some counts, is the OnePlus One.

Priced slightly higher at Rs 21,990, the ‘flagship killer’ is Mi 4’s biggest rival.

Here’s how they stand against each other…

The Mi 4 has a softer persona thanks to rounded corners and looks premium with the steel frame and chamfered edges.

It also has a comparatively smaller form factor.

The OnePlus One on the other hand falls in phablet territory but doesn't feel very bulky thanks to the optimum weight to dimension ratio.

The One is made largely from high-quality polycarbonate materials and the clean lines and subtle curves dominate the minimalist design philosophy of the phone.

Both of the phones are slightly curved at the back, enhancing ergonomics but the OnePlus One comes with a sandstone grey finish which is very unique; it is resistant to smudges and even grime stains are less apparent.

Xiaomi Mi 4 looks more premium but the OnePlus One scores more when it comes to day to day use. However, users who want better one-hand use experience will prefer the Mi 4.

Xiaomi Mi 4 is powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor, Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB RAM.

Interestingly, the OnePlus One also features the same chip and RAM configuration.

Both of the phones don’t feature external storage slots but the OnePlus One has an edge over the Mi 4 as it comes with 64GB of storage space.

The Mi 4 offers just 16GB so you’ll need to think twice before storing your music library or transferring a movie.

The Mi 4 also doesn’t come with support for 4G. The OnePlus One on the other hand, supports Band 3 or FD-LTE 1800MHz which will be used by network providers in India for future deployments.

Both phones don’t support TD-LTE Band 40 2300MHz, which is being currently used. So, OnePlus One will be able to support some 4G networks in India, when they’re rolled out.

Mi 4 comes with a 3080mAh battery and according to Xiaomi, the battery would last one and a half day with normal use.

OnePlus One comes with a 3100mAh battery and the phone lasts a full day with heavy use.

Xiaomi Mi 4 runs MIUI 6, a new version of the company's operating system, based on Android 4.4 KitKat.

The OnePlus One comes with CyanogenMod 11S, a custom aftermarket version of Android 4.4 KitKat developed by Cyanogen.

While OnePlus one’s interface is extremely close to Stock Android, MIUI resembles Apple’s iOS in design and navigation and doesn’t come with a separate app drawer.

CyanogenMod is known for its customisability, enhanced security and additional features, while MIUI focuses on ease of use in addition to offering enhanced native apps, better notifications and things like call recording and call blocking.

Both operating systems support themes and let users customize all UI elements. Of the two, Xiaomi’s MIUI has a richer themes and wallpapers content store.

It’s worth pointing out that there’s an ongoing dispute between OnePlus and Cyanogen due to which OnePlus One will not receive any software updates in the future.

However, OnePlus is working on its own Android ROM(based on Android Lollipop) which will be released in February. The new software may be devoid of some CyanogenMod features.

Xiaomi Mi 4 has been priced at Rs 19,999, while OnePlus One retails at Rs 21,999. The Mi 4 will be exclusively available on Flipkart through weekly flash sales.

The OnePlus One on the other hand is an Amazon India exclusive. It’s invite-based and to get your hands on one, you’ll first need to get hold of an invite.

Both the phones are difficult to acquire and you’ll need to go through the hassle of fetching for an invite or trying your luck in the flash sale.

So which one should you be buying? If you can make do with limited storage, aren’t looking forward to try 4G (to be realistic, it’ll take some time before going mainstream) and don’t want a phablet-sized device, the Mi 4 is your best bet.

If you want to store your entire music library on your phone, want a big phone and like stock Android with high customisability, look no further; the OnePlus One it is.
