One out of every seven people on earth used Facebook on Monday

HOUSTON: Setting a new milestone in social media connectivity, one billion people from around the world logged on to Facebook in a single day, the highest ever, according to company founder Mark Zuckerberg.

"We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day," Zuckerberg posted on Facebook yesterday.

The California-based social networking giant boasted of the new benchmark which was set on Monday.

"On Monday, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family," the Facebook CEO said.

"Our community stands for giving every person a voice, for promoting understanding and for including everyone in the opportunities of our modern world," he said.

"A more open and connected world is a better world. 'It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values," wrote Zuckerberg.

"Thank you for being part of our community and for everything you've done to help us reach this milestone. I'm looking forward to seeing what we accomplish together," he said.

Facebook has nearly 1.5 billion users who log in at least once a month, but this was the most in a single day.

The company gained its billionth user in October 2012.

In his post, Zuckerberg, 31, predicted that Facebook's reach would continue to grow.

"This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world," he wrote.

In July, Facebook claimed that over half of the world's online users visited the site at least once a month.

Since Zuckerberg created Facebook in his Harvard Dorm room in 2004, the social network firm has become the second most trafficked website globally.
