On the grapevine: When a senior cricketer was stumped for answers

The older player refused to comment on the comparisons being drawn between his and the young star’s career graph.

In the past, the senior cricketer had even shared some words of wisdom with the youngster.
Always one to give his opinion right off the bat, this former sportsman has maintained silence over a budding cricketer’s future.

The older player, who gradually found his way back to the game through coaching, refused to comment on the comparisons being drawn between his and the young star’s career graph.

The similarities, however, are uncanny — both are from the same city with strong cricketing talent but are said to lack dedication and focus.


In the past, the senior cricketer had even shared some words of wisdom with the youngster. Now he’s wisely keeping his counsel. For he knows the heavy price that bad form can exact out of rising talent.

As the shortlisted names of the candidates for the top job of the men's team coach are out, Ravi Shastri as incumbent is again in the mix. Captain Virat Kohli made it clear before he left for West Indies that he would prefer Shastri. It is up to the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) led by Kapil Dev to pick the new coach. This is expected by this weekend or early next week.

The Australian who was the coach of the Indian cricket team from 2005-2007 had his term clouded with numerous contention. One of them was his email to then BCCI President Ranbir Singh Mahendra. In the email, Greg Chappell wrote of Indian captain at that time, Sourav Ganguly being "prone to panic" which he claimed "affected the team morale".
