Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has become the talk of the town after her tragic disqualification from the woman’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling category at the 2024 Olympics.

For the unversed, Phogat was disqualified from the game, as she was found to be overweight. Her weight from 100 grams more than the cut-off, 50 kg. The news of her disqualification spread like wildfire on social media. Many Indians expressed their heartbreak.

Phogat’s incredible journey to become one of India’s most celebrated wrestlers, as well as her cute love story with husband Somvir Rathee is also doing the rounds on the Internet. Their fairy tale romance is no less dreamy than Bollywood romantic dramas!

Who Is Vinesh Phogat’s Husband, Somvir Rathee?

For the unversed, Rathee is also an acclaimed wrestler. The two ace wrestlers met when they were employees for the Indian Railway. Their shared passion for the sport soon turned into a romance.

The lovebirds made headlines in August 2018, after they got officially engaged. The duo exchanged rings outside the gates of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, on her 24th birthday, on 25th August. Phogat reached a professional milestone that same month, earning a gold medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta.

The pair finally exchanged vows in December 2018 through an intimate ceremony in Haryana. The event took place in Vinesh’s hometown Charkhi Dadri.

The couple chose to make eight vows instead of the traditional seven, with the additional vow being “beti bachao, beti padhao, beti khilao” (save daughters, educate daughters, and let them play). Vinesh’s cousins, Geeta and Babita Phogat, attended the wedding, with Geeta arriving with her husband, Pawan Kumar.

Vinesh’s sister, Ritu, an Asian Championships bronze medalist, was also present and shared photos leading up to the ceremony.

Rathee is also a national-level wrestler with two national championship golds.
