Ohio-based company transforms wind farms into public spaces
Wind turbine blades are designed to be lightweight while remaining strong enough to withstand years of changing weather and mechanical stress. That durability becomes a problem once the blades are retired. Canvus has developed a range of outdoor products using material recovered from decommissioned turbine blades. The company's designs include benches, tables and other public-space furniture, allowing a component that once helped generate electricity to become part of parks, campuses and community spaces.
The concept is simple: rather than completely breaking down the blade and trying to recover every individual material, parts of the existing composite structure can be cut, shaped and incorporated into a new product. That makes the furniture a form of repurposing rather than conventional recycling.
Why are old blades difficult to recycle?
The US Department of Energy says about 85%–90% of a wind turbine's mass can already be commercially recycled. The major challenge lies in the remaining material, particularly fibre-reinforced composites used in blades, nacelle covers and other components. These composites combine materials such as glass or carbon fibre with resin. The DOE's Wind Energy End-of-Service Guide notes that composite components have historically had limited options beyond landfill disposal, although mechanical recycling and newer repurposing technologies are expanding in the US. The furniture approach keeps the blade's strength. One advantage of turning blades into furniture is that their existing properties can remain useful.

Instead of treating the blade as nothing more than waste that must be chemically separated, designers can use sections of the original structure as durable components. The resulting furniture can therefore retain a visible connection to its previous life. A curved section of a turbine blade can become part of a seat or table, making the material's history part of the design. That is also why these projects can work particularly well in public spaces: the furniture can function as both an everyday object and a visible reminder of the circular-economy idea.
A growing US effort to reuse turbine waste
Canvus is part of a much broader push to find uses for retired wind components. The DOE launched its Wind Turbine Materials Recycling Prize, a $5.1 million programme aimed at developing commercially viable solutions for difficult turbine materials. Projects backed by the programme include technologies that turn blade waste into flooring, concrete coatings, infrastructure products, 3D-printing materials and other composites. The federal government has also estimated that the US already has the infrastructure to recycle about 90% of the mass of decommissioned wind turbines, meaning the harder question is how to deal with the remaining composite-heavy components.

From benches to bridges and buildings
The furniture concept is only one part of the emerging second-life market. Retired blades have also been used in infrastructure projects. A nearly 7,000-pound blade from Colorado was turned into a pedestrian bridge in Atlanta, while researchers in Houston have used retired blade sections to develop a 40-foot highway sign structure. Elsewhere, developers have incorporated old blades into buildings and parking structures, showing that their strength and unusual shape can be useful even after they stop producing electricity.Wind turbines are symbols of renewable energy, but their environmental story does not necessarily end when their blades stop turning. Turning those blades into public furniture offers a remarkably visible solution. A component once designed to capture wind can eventually provide a place to sit, eat or gather. It may not solve the entire wind-turbine waste problem. But projects like these show that the end of a blade's energy-producing life does not have to mean the end of its usefulness.
