BENGALURU: This Christmas and New Year, sections of Bengalureans are opting for offbeat and low-cost international travel destinations. First, domestic New Year’s Eve hotspots like Goa and Kerala are being skipped for overseas travel. Second, popular passport-pitstops like Thailand, Dubai and Singapore are not making the cut either.

According to online travel booking platforms like Cleartrip, Yatra and Makemytrip, there has been a 40% surge in the flight bookings by Bengalureans for Bali, Colombo, Istanbul, Vietnam and Japan, including sub-zero climatic Russia, for the last week of December, the popular holiday season in most parts of the world.

According to Cleartrip, Bengaluru’s travellers have a new holiday mindset this time. The platform has noted a 26% increase in bookings for short-haul travel from Bengaluru since September. Bengalureans, apparently, want to do a week-long refresher break and are looking for options overseas that can be reached in 4-5 hours. They do not mind shelling out 10-20% extra from their pocket to arrive at a low-cost yet tourist-friendly international vacation spot instead of domestic spots like Goa and Kerala which witness steep hotel tariff and expensive flight costs during this time of the year.

Balu Ramachadran, head - air and distribution at Cleartrip, says, “We have seen a 40% jump in this behaviour pattern. Bengaluru’s huge population of 25-35-year-olds have high incomes and want an experiential hook with shopping, theme parks, adventure sports and sightseeing now. They want to be at an Instagram-worthy vacation spot this party season.”

When the landscape of Iceland showed up in a Bollywood movie some time back, many were prompted to ask if the sequence was shot on location, or if the backdrop was a result of computer generated graphics. That’s how unreal Iceland can be. The popularity of this European nation has been on a steady rise, prompting a national discussion about applying curbs on the number of tourists permitted to visit. Best to tick this one off the bucket list, before your name slips on to a waiting list of visitors.

True, the country has a checkered past, enmeshed in a long history of violence. But nothing like tourism to change a nation’s image and fortunes. Earlier this year, the country’s tourism department signed a multi-million dollar branding deal with English football club Arsenal, putting the country’s tourism tagline on player jerseys. The deal quickly became controversial as Rwanda is one of the world’s poorest countries and marketing monies are frowned upon. But soon the number of UK visitors surged, claimed officials. Something did the trick. Either the campaign, or the country’s stunning national parks and wildlife.

It’s been voted as one of the best cities to live in the world. Not exactly unknown, the city does tend to lose out to the hordes that prefer the shinier, bigger cities of neighbouring United States. But by itself, Vancouver, a west coast seaport in British Columbia, is not just one of Canada’s densest, most ethnically diverse cities, it is also a thriving metropolis with a buzzing art, music, food and theatre scene. Surrounded by mountains, it isn’t too hard on the eyes either.

Top destinations from Bengaluru, as per data collected by Cleartrip between September and early December, are Kuala Lumpur (60%), Colombo (57%), Sharjah (54%), Denpasar (54%) and Bangkok (25%).

On Yatra.com, Bali, Istanbul and Japan have replaced mainstream destinations Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia to emerge as the top three destinations for Christmas and New Year. Egypt and Greece, apparently, have taken a hit too due to political situation.

“Bengalureans don’t want to go with the herd. We have, especially, noted a 50% jump in the number of bookings to Bali. Mumbai and Delhi are still happy to go with runof-the-mill Thailand,” says Sharat Shall, chief operating officer at the platform.

Travel booking platform Makemytrip claims a 40% surge in the number of bookings for shorthaul destinations like Bali and Thailand. Apart from this, they have witnessed a 20% uptick for long-haul yet offbeat destinations like Russia, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

An official spokesperson of Makemytrip says, “People from Bengaluru are opting for both domestic and international holidays despite weaker currency value. Some international holiday spots are seen as surrogates for European luxury destinations as they are scenic and off the beaten path.”
