To combat pollution’s effects, nutritionist Lovneet Batra recommends a simple four-ingredient Ayurvedic morning drink—mulethi, ginger, ajwain, and jaggery—that soothes the respiratory tract, detoxifies lungs, and supports breathing, offering an easy, natural preventive measure alongside masks and air purifiers.
Delhi’s air quality remains a serious concern, with the Central Pollution Control Board reporting an Air Quality Index (AQI) in ‘very poor’ category. Truck-mounted sprinklers were deployed to tackle particulate matter to tackle health concerns.

Former AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria warned that poor air quality is causing acute respiratory and cardiovascular effects, particularly for the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing conditions. “Even healthy individuals are experiencing nasal congestion, throat irritation, chest tightness, and coughing. Pollutants are inflaming airways and worsening symptoms,” he told ANI.

A Simple Home Remedy to Support Lung Health

Award-winning nutritionist Lovneet Batra shared an Ayurvedic morning drink designed to protect the respiratory system naturally. In a recent social media post, Batra called it a “must-have morning drink to protect your lungs from pollution.”

The recipe is simple:

  • Mulethi (Licorice Root) – 3-inch piece
  • Fresh Ginger – ½ inch piece
  • Ajwain (Carom Seeds) – 1 tsp
  • Jaggery – ½ tsp (optional)
How to Prepare: Boil mulethi, ginger, and ajwain in 1.5 cups of water until it reduces by half. Strain, add jaggery, and drink warm on an empty stomach.

Why It Works:

  • Mulethi: Soothes the respiratory tract and reduces inflammation.
  • Ginger: Contains gingerol to ease lung irritation and support clear breathing.
  • Ajwain: Improves digestion, fights microbes, and defends cells from pollutants.
  • Jaggery: Detoxifies the lungs and aids in removing dust and harmful particles.

Start Your Day with a Protective Ritual

Batra emphasized that this four-ingredient drink is an easy way to give your lungs a daily boost amid harsh urban pollution. “Protecting your lungs starts from your kitchen,” she noted, highlighting the simplicity and effectiveness of the practice.

As Delhi continues to battle poor air quality, this drink offers residents a practical preventive measure to complement other safety strategies like masks and air purifiers.
