Nothing gets past Dwayne Leverock, even now
Robin Uthappa snicked one against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup and in the slips, a sumo wrestler of a man threw himself to his right to pull off a sensational catch. The acrobatic nature of the catch and the man’s hippopotamus frame ensured Dwayne Leverock a permanent place in World Cup history. The dismissal was called “the catch that shook the world”, an apt title considering Leverock tipped the scales at 127 kg.

Leverock was primarily a slow left-arm bowler who played 32 ODIs for Bermuda and took 34 wickets. Following his three-year cricket career, ‘Sluggo’ has been involved in a variety of professions. He is an avid golfer, does cricket coaching, and for a long time, was a policeman and a prison van driver in Hamilton. He ferried hardcore criminals around. It is safe to assume not many tried any hanky panky with the big man at the wheel. Leverock, however, said he found bowling to Kevin Pietersen harder than driving thugs because Pietersen was “more unorthodox”. The man also loves his food, beef curry being his favourite. Last heard, he lived above a curry house in Bermuda. He must be catching quite a few of those, just as he grabbed Uthappa’s edge.
