A picture can speak a thousand words, & then the internet can add a couple more.

The BCCI was stumped after facing a backlash over actress Anushka Sharma posing for an official photo with Team India. A look at other pictures that hit everyone for a six.

A picture can speak a thousand words — and then the internet can add a couple thousand more. These are the pictures that have created a storm in the recent past:

Sunil Gavaskar and Vijay Mallya

Last year, a picture of Sunil Gavaskar with disgraced businessman Vijay Mallya during the Champions Trophy in England started to do the rounds.

While social media was abuzz, the former cricketer brushed off the incident saying, “Vijay is a friend, so if a picture of me with him was circulated, it didn’t bother me at all.”

Satya Nadella and Narendra Modi

While many on the internet jumped to the conclusion that Nadella was wiping his hands after the handshake, others put it down to sweaty palms — a sign of social anxiety.

Mesut Ozil and President Erdogan
When German footballer of Turkish descent Mesut Ozil posted a picture with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, little did he know the drama it would cause. The picture caused outrage during the World Cup, with many questioning Ozil’s loyalty to Germany.

The noise surrounding this picture was so strong, that Ozil released a statement where he said that he had two hearts — one German and one Turkish — and insisted that the picture had “no political intentions”. Ozil has since quit the German national side.

Sophie Trudeau and Jaspal Atwal
At first, one thought the biggest problem about the Trudeaus’ India trip in February was their overthe-top attire. But it turns out that taking a picture with a man convicted of attempted murderer can top that.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie, was clicked with Jaspal Atwal, who was convicted of trying to kill an Indian cabinet minister in 1986. Sophie addressed the issue by saying, “So I stand there with all my presence and I take a picture with pleasure, then something shocking comes along. That’s life, right?"

Narendra Modi and Nirav Modi
Earlier in the year, a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) photo op at Davos created quite a stir. The picture had PM Narendra Modi sharing frame with on-the-run diamantaire Nirav Modi.

Also present was CII President Shobana Kamineni (also, EVC, Apollo Hospitals). When asked about the infamous picture, Kamineni told ETPanache, “I don’t even know him [Nirav]. He is not even a CII member. He is a Davos member and was present in the picture.

It is unfortunate that the picture got highlighted for all the wrong reasons, and not the good work that the Indian industry is doing.”
