The relationship between start- ups and venture capitalists (VCs) is symbiotic and yet, there is a shortage of VCs who have deep technical knowledge in India, feels entrepreneur and former executive director of Tata Sons, Alan Rosling.

Delivering a talk, Rosling furthered his argument by narrating a funding issue faced by a Delhi-based pharma startup, of which he is a board member.

"They [the startup founders] raised $15 million for a drug discovery program. But it's now at a stage where it needs $30 million to get clearance from the USFDA. The only investors with confidence in making a judgment on molecule are in the US. So, they have to go to there to get the next round of funding," he said.

Rosling is, however, hopeful that India will have specialised investors in the next two decades.
