One bowl of muskmelon daily can help the body in summer
As temperatures continue to rise across many parts of India, doctors are once again advising people to pay closer attention to hydration and summer-friendly foods. During extreme heat, many people deal with dehydration, bloating, tiredness and digestion-related discomfort almost every day. This is why seasonal fruits with high water content become an important part of the diet during this time of the year. One such fruit now being recommended by experts is muskmelon, also known as kharbuja, which is widely available during summer months.

According to Dr Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, muskmelon is one of the “most underrated” fruits of the season. In a recent Instagram video, the doctor explained that eating one bowl of muskmelon daily during summer may support hydration, digestion, metabolism and insulin response, especially in women dealing with hormonal and weight-related concerns.

Helps keep the body hydrated in summer

Muskmelon contains nearly 90 percent water, which makes it one of the most useful fruits during hot weather. Since the body loses fluids quickly through sweating in summer, water-rich fruits like kharbuja can help maintain hydration and reduce tiredness caused by heat.

Dr Shubham Vatsya said, “Muskmelons also have 90 percent water along with potassium, which supports kidney filtration, reduces water retention and bloating.” Experts from Medanta also noted that potassium helps maintain fluid balance in the body during extreme heat.

May support insulin response and metabolism

Doctors say muskmelon may also help people dealing with insulin resistance and metabolism-related concerns. The fruit contains inositol, a compound linked to better insulin efficiency and fat metabolism.

Dr Vatsya explained, “One bowl of muskmelon has roughly 500 to 600mg of inositol, which improves the insulin efficiency of the body. It also supports fat metabolism, and because of these reasons, it becomes clinically relevant in dealing with PCOS (recently renamed to PMOS or polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), insulin resistance and weight issues.”

Good for digestion and gut health

Muskmelon contains fibre, which may help support smoother digestion during summer months. According to Medanta, dietary fibre in the fruit supports bowel movements and may help prevent constipation, especially when dehydration affects digestion.

Dr Vatsya said, “Kharbuja is also rich in fibre that helps the gut lining.” Experts also point out that the fruit’s combination of water and fibre may help the digestive system work more comfortably while keeping the stomach light.

Supports immunity, skin health and weight management

Muskmelon is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and beta-carotene, nutrients linked to immunity and skin repair. According to Medanta, 100 grams of muskmelon can provide more than half of the daily vitamin C and vitamin A needs.

“The fruit is also loaded with vitamin C and beta carotene, which strengthen the immune response, repair the skin, and slow down cellular damage and inflammation,” Dr Vatsya explained. The fruit is also naturally low in calories, with around 24 to 34 calories per 100 grams, while its water and fibre content may help keep people fuller for longer.

Doctors advise moderation despite benefits

While muskmelon offers several health benefits, experts also advise avoiding overeating. Too much fibre may lead to bloating, stomach cramps or diarrhoea in some people. Unwashed melons may also carry a risk of bacterial contamination.

People with diabetes are advised to eat controlled portions. According to Medanta, muskmelon has a glycemic index of 65 but a low glycemic load. Experts suggest limiting intake to one cup a day and monitoring blood sugar levels after consumption.

Dr Vatsya finally advised, “Have one bowl of muskmelon every day in the summer. This not only cools the body, but also takes care of hydration, metabolism, insulin response, and digestion, altogether.”
