Rahul Patil, the Bengaluru-raised chief technology officer of American AI startup Anthropic, is one such story. From strict classrooms at PES University to shaping global AI infrastructure, Patil’s path combines homegrown curiosity, academic rigour, and personal milestones. His story is as much about love and roots as it is about world-class technology.

Rahul Patil, speaking at the Anthropic Builder Summit in Bengaluru, reflected on his city upbringing, schooling, and undergraduate journey before moving to the United States. He shared that even amidst the highly disciplined environment at PES University, he met his wife during the first year of engineering—a relationship that blossomed despite the campus’s strict rules. Patil credited his formative years in Bengaluru, inspired by a computer science teacher mother and a farming family from North Karnataka, for shaping his passion for building technology.

Anthropic, one of the world’s fastest-growing AI startups, recently opened an office in Bengaluru, bringing Patil’s journey full circle. Today, he leads the company’s technological vision, crafting AI designed to be safe, dependable, and globally impactful. From PES labs to international AI infrastructure, Rahul Patil exemplifies a unique blend of grounded curiosity and quietly world-class expertise, embodying the unmistakable energy of Bengaluru.



Who is Rahul Patil?

Rahul Patil, appointed CTO of Anthropic in October 2025, is driving the enterprise-scale evolution of Claude, the startup’s AI platform. Known on Wall Street for the “Patil effect,” he reorganised teams and optimised costly hardware through smarter memory use and faster decoding, allowing Anthropic to offer always-on AI agents directly to companies.

A Bengaluru native, Patil earned a BE in Computer Science from PES University before completing an MS in Computer Science at Arizona State University and the University of Washington, along with an MBA. He began his career at Microsoft, where he spent nine years in engineering roles. In 2013, he joined Amazon Web Services to build large-scale data platforms for mobile, IoT, and cloud developers. He later became senior VP for cloud infrastructure at Oracle, overseeing engineering and product management across compute, storage, security, and monitoring services, blending technical depth with strategic vision.
