Nokia 5.3 review: Subtle design with a nice blend of software & hardware

The blend of software and hardware makes it one of the best phones in the price segment.

The strength of the Nokia 5.3 is its operating system.
Get It For: Rs 13,999
Highlight: Reliable performance

There are too many options in the sub- Rs 15,000 smartphone category, especially with all the handsets trying to outdo each other with minor improvements here and there. However, if you are looking for a no-nonsense device, Nokia 5.3 could be your next buy.

The handset offers a sturdy form factor that has a subtle design. It will appeal to those who don't like flashy phones. But it can also stand out in a crowd.

A Corning Gorilla 3 glass protection safeguards the display, which manages to deliver decent sunlight visibility. Powering the 5.3 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC. While the processor is not the fastest you can get in this price range, the performance isn’t compromised. We faced no issues during our day-to-day usage. You get 64GB internal storage, microSD card support of up to 512GB and two RAM options — 4GB and 6GB.

The Nokia 5.3 houses a quad-camera setup with a 13MP primary camera. There is also a 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth lens. The camera app is super snappy and captures detailed images in daylight from the primary sensor. The quality does suffer while using the ultra-wide-angle sensor. But the images are much better when clicked in the bokeh mode and even in close-up shots.

It comes with a 4000mAh battery paired with 10W charging support. This does not match up to the competition. However, the handset lasted over a day of casual use. So we didn't have a problem as long as the screen time did not surge skyward.

The strength of the Nokia 5.3 is its operating system. The handset runs on stock Android 10 as it is part of the Android One programme. The UI doesn’t have bloatware — a rarity in this price range. You can expect the device to get regular security updates for up to three years, which is another plus for the handset.

This is a phone low on frills but is one of the better buys in the segment owing to a nice blend of software and hardware.
