No rivalry, but brotherhood exists between Rajiv Bajaj and Siddhartha Lal

Eicher Motors and Bajaj Auto may be professional rivals, but their managing directors are anything but. In a recent business magazine interview, London-based Eicher Motors CEO Siddhartha Lal spoke of his friendship with Bajaj Auto’s Rajiv Bajaj. He said, “Obviously, in the market, we have to do what we have to do. At the front end, there is no friendship. But at the backend, we are friends.”

Lal added that Bajaj was like an older brother. “When we were tiny, and we needed guidance, he opened his doors. We always had an amazing friendship, there is no doubt about that. But at the front end, it is all competition.”

There may be some truth to that statement. Even though Lal is currently London-based, the duo reportedly own holiday “cottages” next to each other in Rishikesh. Despite all speculation, the two have always spoken positively of each other. Once asked if he viewed Lal as a rival, Bajaj said, “I don’t think of him as a competitor. I don’t think things should be seen in such a small way.”
