Malayalam superstar Mammootty has once again proved his versatility with 2025 crime thriller Kalamkaval, where he takes on the challenging role of a psychopath. Directed by debutant Jithin K. Jose, the film has generated strong buzz for its dark theme and gripping storytelling. While audiences have praised his performance, the actor recently opened up about why he had to back the film himself and how it shows his constant need to evolve.

A risky role no one wanted to back

In a recent interaction with The Hollywood Reporter India, Mammootty revealed that Kalamkaval was not an easy project to mount. He shared that most producers were reluctant to cast him in such a morally complex and unconventional role. Instead of dropping the idea, he decided to take matters into his own hands and produce the film under his banner.

He explained why he opened his own production house and said, "I started my production company to make films that I like, and which no one else are ready to make. No other producer will agree to cast me in such a role, so I produced it myself," This decision allowed him to explore a darker, more layered character without compromise.

Breaking away from safe choices

Playing a psychopath is far from a typical mainstream role, especially for a star of Mammootty’s stature. However, the actor admitted that he has never been interested in playing it safe. For him, the challenge lies in stepping into unfamiliar territory.

His performance in Kalamkaval shows that mindset. The film’s narrative, which revolves around a serial killer targeting women, blends psychological depth with investigative drama. Loosely inspired by real-life events, the story has struck a chord with audiences for its intense and unsettling tone.

Looking back at his decades-long career, Mammootty emphasised the importance of reinvention. He said that as an actor, repeating the same kind of roles over and over is not fulfilling. He believes that cinema offers endless possibilities, and it is important to explore different kinds of characters.

He also pointed out that real life is full of diverse personalities and behaviours, which serve as inspiration for his performances. While it may not be possible to portray every kind of character, he continues to seek roles that push him creatively.

For the unversed, Kalamkaval also features notable performances by Vinayakan, Rajisha Vijayan, and Gibin Gopinath. The film was released in theatres on December 5, 2025, where it received both critical appreciation and a positive box office response. Following its theatrical run, the film found a wider audience on SonyLIV.

Looking ahead to Patriot

After the success of Kalamkaval, Mammootty is now gearing up for his next big project, Patriot. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the film features a star-studded cast including Mohanlal, Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, Revathi, and Darshana.

The film is particularly special as it marks Mammootty’s on-screen reunion with Mohanlal after nearly two decades. Slated for release on May 1, Patriot is expected to be a large-scale, content-driven film.

Besides this, Mammootty also has Padayatra in his pipeline. This movie will mark the Malayalam actor and filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan's first collaboration in 32 years. The movie is being directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan who co-wrote the script with novelist K. V. Mohan Kumar. Stay tuned1
