Butter made in a town in Tamil Nadu is known for unique taste and high fat content
It tastes divine. It is rich in nutrition. It is made without preservatives and can last almost a month without a refrigerator. Made in a tiny town in Tamil Nadu called Uthukuli, the Uthukuli butter is now the most famous GI tagged butter in India.

According to a Hindu report, the distinctive quality of Uthukuli butter comes from the milk of the buffaloes reared in the region and their unique diet. Since Uthukuli has a dry, semi-arid climate, the animals primarily graze on hardy, drought-tolerant grasses and locally available seeds. This natural fodder contributes to producing milk with an exceptionally high fat content, making it much richer and creamier than ordinary cow's milk. The superior richness of the milk gives Uthukuli butter its characteristic texture, flavor, and premium quality, setting it apart from conventional varieties.

In an interview with The Hindu, P. Rasu, the manager of Avarampalayam Sarvodaya Sangh dairy unit, explained what made this butter a class apart from other butters. “Uthukuli being an arid region, the buffaloes are mostly fed with solathattai (sorghum stalks), kolukattai pul (a type of drought-resistant grass) and cotton seed. This makes its milk rich in fat content than the regular cow’s milk,” he notes. “There will be around one kg of cream for 10 litres of buffalo milk,” he said.

The butter is made with traditional methods such as hand-churning the cream in large wooden churns and shaping the butter into cylindrical blocks. No preservatives are involved.

A Times Of India report outlined the nutritional profile of Uthukuli butter:

It is rich in nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E and K, healthy fats and proteins

Renowned for its rich flavour and smooth, creamy texture, this butter is a highly versatile ingredient that enhances a variety of dishes. It can be used for cooking, spread over bread or toast, or blended into cakes, pastries, sweets, and other baked delicacies.

Its deep, buttery taste adds richness and depth to recipes, elevating both everyday meals and gourmet creations. Thanks to its exceptional quality, adaptability, and distinctive taste, this butter has earned widespread appreciation from professional chefs as well as home cooks, making it a preferred choice in kitchens for both traditional and modern culinary preparations.
