No labels, please! Calling Twitter a 'microblogging site' doesn't make Jack Dorsey happy

The next time you call Twitter a ‘microblogging site’, you might want to watch out. In a recent interview with NYU professor Jay Rosen, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey confessed that one of the titles that really gets to him is when people refer to Twitter as ‘microblogging’.

“I’ve always despised (that term) because it encourages the behaviour of post-comment-comment-comment versus message-message-message and it just feels to be such a dead end,” said Dorsey. He said that the ‘microblogging’ label indicates a lack of fluidity.

In contrast, one of the labels that Dorsey does approve of is ‘the place where the news gets the news’. In the same interview, he said, “I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that people do feel free to discuss what’s happening. And sometimes what’s being discussed becomes the news.”
