In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Mira Nair revealed that she had directly offered Zohran Mamdani the central role in A Suitable Boy. She explained that whenever she needs someone to read lines opposite an actress, he has always been willing to help if he is home. However, when it came to A Suitable Boy, where she genuinely wanted him to play the lead, he declined. According to Nair, Mamdani’s response reflected a deep self-awareness. He understood that while many would jump at such an opportunity, acting was not something he felt compelled to pursue. She quoted him saying, "A lot of people die to be offered these things, but I don't."
Nair described her son as the most 'reluctant actor' she has ever encountered. She admitted that he never truly wanted to act, and she eventually had to accept that. At the same time, she expressed gratitude for his clarity. Yet, she firmly believes he has natural charisma and an effortless ability to connect with people, something she has always admired.
