Who will play Silk Smitha next after Vidya Balan? New biopic announced on 'Siren Of South's 64th birth anniversary

Silk Smitha, the siren of the South Indian silver screen, ruled the marquees for many years in the 1980s. Her meteoric rise and fall (untimely demise) inspired many celluloid ventures, with the most famous being the 2011 blockbuster ‘Dirty Picture’ which starred Vidya Balan. On her 64th birth anniversary, another biopic was announced by STRI Cinemas.

The movie is titled: ‘Silk Smitha: Queen Of The South.’ An official biopic is set to chronicle the intriguing journey of the iconic actress, with Chandrika Ravi taking on the lead role. Helmed by director Jayaram Sankaran and produced by SB. Vijay Amirtharaj, the film is scheduled to begin production in early 2025. Anticipation for the project is already soaring, promising widespread appeal across South Indian languages.

To celebrate this milestone announcement on her birthday, the creators released an exclusive video teaser, offering viewers a sneak peek into the life of Silk Smitha, hailed as the ‘Queen of the South.’

Who Was Silk Smitha?

Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati, aka Silk Smitha, was perhaps the earliest sex symbol of South Indian industry. Known for her sultry expressions, ‘thunder thighs’ and impeccable dance moves, Smitha quickly became a coveted vamp in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. She also carved a name in the B-grade film industry.
Throughout her remarkable 18-year career, she appeared in more than 450 films, earning fame for her captivating performances in numerous iconic dance sequences of the 1980s. Initially entering the film industry in supporting roles, she gained widespread attention for her portrayal of "Silk" in the 1979 Tamil movie Vandichakkaram, which became a defining moment in her journey to stardom.
