Project Respindle is a youth-led initiative based in New Jersey. The students collect discarded plastic bottles and process them through their machine to create material that can be used in a 3D printer. That filament is then used to make practical clean-up equipment, including trash pickers and bag holders. The students describe their idea as a cycle: plastic waste is turned into tools, and those tools are then used to collect more waste. The group says it attends local events to demonstrate the project and donates its tools to environmental organisations.

The project has already collected plastic through neighbourhood drives and received more than 50 pounds of plastic bottles from Mazza Recycling, a recycling company in Tinton Falls, New Jersey.

The students are using the tools in real clean-ups

Project Respindle says it has supplied its 3D-printed tools to Stroke Your ECO, a New Jersey environmental group whose volunteers remove litter from waterways using canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. The students also supplied tools to Clean Ocean Action for its Fall Beach Sweep, where volunteers collected thousands of pounds of rubbish. This gives the project a practical purpose. Instead of simply turning bottles into another plastic product, the students are using the recycled material to make equipment that can help remove more waste from beaches and waterways.

Why plastic bottles are a serious problem

The students' idea comes as communities continue to struggle with plastic pollution. The US Environmental Protection Agency says plastic waste in the country's municipal waste system has increased greatly over the decades. In 2018, the US generated 35.7 million tons of plastic waste, while only 8.7% was recycled. The problem also extends beyond landfills and recycling centres. NOAA says plastic is the most common type of marine debris and can reach oceans through litter, stormwater and waterways. Once plastic enters the ocean, it does not fully biodegrade and can break into smaller pieces known as microplastics.

Turning waste into a circular process

The idea behind Project Respindle fits into what the EPA calls a circular economy, where materials that would normally be thrown away are recovered and used to make new products. The EPA says a circular economy can recover materials previously considered waste and use them as resources to manufacture new products. The students are applying that idea on a much smaller, community level. A bottle that might otherwise become waste is instead given another purpose before the resulting product is used to tackle more waste.
