Arlo is a D-I-Y security surveillance solution – it takes under 10 minutes to set it up. The box includes a base station and two wireless cameras but you can add more cameras later (they’re available individually). The cameras are truly wireless — not only do they use wi-fi but they are also battery powered. That’s primarily why the system is so simple to install — you can place the cameras anywhere (within 200 ft of the wireless hub).

You start by downloading the companion app and it takes you through setup and pairing of the cameras with the base station. Each camera streams 720p HD video and is weatherproof (IP65) so you don’t need to worry if you intend to place one outside. There’s also two-way audio, powerful motion detection (which works using an effective PIR motion sensor), night vision and a lens that covers a 130-degree field of view.



By default, it’s set to motion detection — this means the system will notify you on your phone if it detects motion and capture a short video. You can also make your own recording rules, go to a live view at any time in the app or start recording video manually which is then saved to the cloud. In the motion detection mode, the battery in each camera is supposed to last between four to six months! When you need to charge one of them, you’re notified in the app. Just grab the camera and plug in a phone charger (micro USB).

You get a basic storage plan when you register on the Arlo app. This gives you 7 days of cloud recording and support for up to 5 cameras. If you want to record footage locally, you can just plug a USB hard drive into the base station. There are also additional service plans available to store up to 30 days or 60 days of footage in the cloud.
