Netflix employee shares emotional message after 12 years
Adam Mulder took to LinkedIn to announce that he was among the nearly 1,000 people affected by Netflix’s latest layoffs. Reflecting on his 12-year stint, he said it was “hard to put into words” how much working with his colleagues had meant to him.Mulder expressed gratitude for the years he spent at the company and the people he worked alongside, describing them as some of the most talented and generous people he had known. He also extended his support to everyone affected by the job cuts.
Offering practical help to former colleagues, Mulder said anyone who needed to vent, discuss their next steps or prepare for interviews could reach out to him. He added that he was willing to support them however he could. The employee also revealed that he had begun looking for his next opportunity. He asked people who knew his work to introduce him to roles where they believed he could make a difference.
Why is Netflix laying off nearly 1,000 employees?
Netflix plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 6%, translating to nearly 1,000 positions, as part of broader organisational changes. According to a memo sent to employees, the company’s product, technology, legal and human resources teams are expected to be among the most affected, reported Associated Press. Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos announced the job cuts in the memo on Wednesday. They acknowledged that such decisions were difficult, writing that they did not take them lightly. The executives maintained that Netflix’s business remained strong. However, they said the company needed to be “disciplined about where we prioritise our people and resources” while investing in future growth and high-impact areas that could improve its service. Netflix declined to comment further on Wednesday’s layoffs beyond the memo, which was obtained by The Associated Press.
Netflix reports billions in profit despite job cuts
The layoffs come as Netflix continues to report growth in its financial performance. The company’s profits have risen this year amid membership sign-ups and price increases. In the second quarter, Netflix recorded a profit of USD 3.4 billion and revenue of USD 12.56 billion. These figures represented increases of 9% and 13%, respectively, compared with the same period last year. However, the company’s forecast for the third quarter fell short of Wall Street’s expectations. Netflix was scheduled to report its third-quarter earnings the following week, offering investors another update on its financial performance as the organisational changes unfold.
