The Netflix documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale,’ chronicling the actress’s cinematic journey and personal life, premiered in November last year. Nearly two months later, the film has resurfaced in the news. Reports claim that the creators of the 2005 Tamil movie ‘Chandramukhi’ have initiated legal proceedings, alleging that clips from their film were featured in the documentary without authorization.

Allegedly, they have sued Nayanthara and demanded Rs 5 crore in damages. However, these claims have been refuted by the ‘Chandramukhi’ team, who stated they granted permission to use the footage.

According to actor Chitra Lakshman’s YouTube channel, the ‘Chandramukhi’ makers were dissatisfied with the inclusion of specific scenes from their movie in the Netflix project. Despite this, a report from the Times of India clarified that the ‘Chandramukhi’ creators denied filing any case against Nayanthara. They confirmed that permission for the footage had been formally granted.

This is not the first controversy surrounding the documentary. Previously, actor-producer Dhanush issued a legal notice to Nayanthara, demanding Rs 10 crore for the alleged unauthorized use of a three-second behind-the-scenes (BTS) clip from the film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.’ On November 16, Nayanthara publicly addressed the issue, sharing an open letter criticizing Dhanush for his refusal to permit the use of material from the movie, which he had produced.

‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan,’ directed by Nayanthara’s husband, Vignesh Shivan, holds significant sentimental value for the actress as it marked the inception of her relationship with Shivan. Nayanthara reportedly sought Dhanush’s consent to incorporate songs and other elements from the film into the documentary. Despite multiple requests, Dhanush denied permission. Matters escalated when the documentary’s trailer featured a three-second clip from the film’s sets, prompting Dhanush to send a legal notice.

These disputes have cast a shadow over the documentary’s release, drawing attention to the complexities of copyright and permissions in the entertainment industry. While Nayanthara’s documentary celebrates her journey, the controversies surrounding it underscore the challenges of balancing creative expression with legal and ethical considerations.
