BENGALURU: Tired of eating dal-rice and parathas, this Navaratri, software engineer Shreeram Kushwaha is giving himself pastas and pizzas. “It breaks the monotony and helps me curb my craving for non-veg food,” said the 26-year-old Bengalurean. The thriving eating-out culture of Bengaluru has created a gamut of options for him to pick from.
Carolyn Theresa Simon (24) is celebrating Navaratri in right earnest. While most meat-eaters turn vegetarian in this period, Simon has gone a step further and turned vegan for the ten days. The yoga instructor is taking the opportunity to explore vegan options across cuisines.

World cuisine has forayed into Navaratri diet menus in Bengaluru. While traditional staples like khichdi and potato continue to flourish, the city’s demanding taste-buds has eateries modifying their menus to suit dieting palates.
Tim Tai introduced a special Navaratri menu featuring Asian food without onion and garlic. Crispy lotus stems, Burmese khow suey, pineapple and litchi curry, and brownies without egg and yeast. Enquiries for veg options sans onion and garlic a year ago convinced them to curate this special menu. The place’s F&B manager Abhishek Dutta said they are seeing a 20% growth in veg food sales in the last ten days.

Lady Baga has apparently seen a 70% spike in sales of its continental veg menu. “Pasta in pesto and tomato sauces are moving quickly. Grills, without onion and garlic, like tofu and mushroom, cheese and brie have received high orders,” says co-owner Deepti K Das.

City-based online food delivery platform PurpleBasil has noted a 20% spike in subscriptions for a 10-day vegan diet plan. A majority of the takers are apparently corporate executives aged between 30-40 years.
“Looking closely at the subscription pattern over the past ten days, it is clear that many are using this opportunity as a trial period to detox with a new diet plan. Vietnamese summer roll and Chiang Mai curry are bestsellers,” said founder Dhananjai Raja Kuttikad.
