Nasal Vestibulities - An irritating nostril isn't always cold?
Usually we presume that irritation in the nostril is due to cold but not always. Let us look at the types, causes, symptoms and treatment.

Types
Acute Vestibulitis: Characterised by redness, tenderness and swelling of the skin
Chronic Vestibulitis: Characterised by hardening and crusting of the vestibular skin
Causes
Habits like nose picking, viral infections, chronic rhinorrhea, folliculitis of nasal hair and removing nasal hair when suffering from cold or flu
Symptoms
Irritation, pain in affected nostril or nose, which increases in intensity as the condition worsens
Redness over nasal skin
Presence of a lump or a boil or a pimple at nasal entrance
A lump or a boil or a pimple on the nose
Difficulty in breathing from affected nostril
Difficulty in sneezing
Spreading of infection causes rise in warmth, redness and swelling of skin
Difficulty in sleeping due to pain
If facial cellulitis occurs, then swelling over the nose, on the affected side of face and under eyes is seen
If cavernous sinus is involved, eye swelling, double vision and decreased vision is experienced
Treatment
Treatment is done using antibiotics, such as dicloxacillin
Must complete the entire course of antibiot ics, even if the symptoms subside, to prevent recurrence
If nasal vestibulitis occurs along with facial cellulitis, then IV antibiotics are given
