Police are awaiting a green signal from the Madhya Pradesh state government to submit a chargesheet against ‘Bigg Boss 17’ winner Munawar Faruqui.

The stand-up comedian got arrested in 2021 for making some insensitive remarks about Lord Ram during a stand-up comedy performance in Indore. Although he was sent behind bars, he got bail a month later. A case was registered against him and four other members of his troupe under section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).

The FIR was filed by Eklavya Singh Gaur, the son of a local BJP MLA Malini Laxman Singh Gaur.

However, following this incident, Faruqui was subjected to incessant trolling online and offline, and he had to cancel many live shows.

A senior prosecution department official revealed that the police department has requested the state government to let them file a chargesheet against the actor-comedian under Indian Penal Code section 295-A on January 29, 2021.

As per the rules of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the state government's permission is required before a chargesheet is presented in a case registered under section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code.
