The actress turned politician said she did not want to comment on the political affiliations of Khan who was her long-time friend. She described him as a great friend and human being.

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Thursday. He was busy, holding a protest march in Gujranwala, when he was gunned down.

Indian actress turned politician Moon Moon Sen reacted to the news recently. In an interview with a leading Bengali language daily, the actress expressed her concern for Khan and termed the gun attack as “an act of cowardice.”

“Imran is an old-friend of mine. He has acquired such a big name for himself in the world of cricket as well as politics. As long as I have known him, he has always wanted the best for his country. So it is shocking that he is today he is almost murdered by dissenters in his own motherland.” Sen also added that she would not be making any political comments. “I refuse to comment on his political affiliation. I have known Imran as a world-class cricketer as well as an excellent human being, a dependable friend. He has many friends and well-wishers in Kolkata. Whenever he had dropped in to visit, he had left some great memories. Whoever has tried to take his life has committed an act of cowardice,” she was quoted as saying to the daily.

Khan, who was ousted from his position as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, was shot when he was holding a protest march in Wazirabad. Although he escaped the attack, he was wounded on the leg when a burst of gunfire hit his vehicle. One person was killed and at least five others were injured.

In an interview with the BBC World Service’s Newshour programme, Raoof Hasan, a close aide of the former Pakistani PM, claimed that the Pakistani government was "directly involved" in the attack.

Khan’s ex wife, screenwriter and producer Jemima Goldsmith has expressed relief at the news of the former PM being safe after the assassination attempt. She took to Twitter to express her joy with her followers. "The news we dread. Thank God he’s okay. And thank you from his sons to the heroic man in the crowd who tackled the gunman," she tweeted.
