Mivi has been building up their product portfolio. They started with wireless headphones and now they have a range of new Bluetooth speakers. Their budget range covers different price points. Mivi Roam is the smallest, followed by the mid-size Moonstone and then the Octave for those who want louder sound. All three are water resistant and come with a pullout flap that protects the charging and aux ports. The shape and size of the three speakers is different but overall fit and finish is the same: matte finish plastic plus water-resistant fabric on top and sides. All speakers have four buttons for power, volume up, volume down and play/pause. The Mivi Roam is IP67 certified for water resistance. The Mivi Roam has a rated output of 5 watts. We would say it is loud enough for a mid-size room but the base is not as loud as other similar size speakers from brands like Boat & JBL. That being said, we were impressed with the clarity from the compact size. It’s a good travel companion if you want to listen to songs or watch videos. It’s IP67 certified for water resistance and with volume at 70%, it gave us roughly 6 hours of music listening. Moonstone offers about 6 hours of battery life with the volume set between 60-70%. Moonstone is the mid-size speaker with a rated 10 watts output. Performance is about the same as the smaller Roam but it has a wider sound stage and a fuller sound. While the bass is there, it’s just slightly more than the smallest Roam. If you’re into hip-hop or dance music with heavy bass, you won’t like the the Moonstone. Battery life is also similar — just about 6 hours with the volume set between 60-70%.
Octave is the largest and not surprisingly, the best sounding one too. It has 16 watts of power and 360-degree audio thanks to omni directional transducers. Other speakers in this price range tend to have an output of about 12 watts. The Octave delivers rich thumping bass. great for any type of music. It also delivered the best battery life thanks to the big 2,600mAH battery. At 50% volume (it was loud enough for a midsize room at this audio level), we got just over 11 hours of playback — that’s fantastic considering the size of the speaker.

One great feature on all three speakers is that they support wireless pairing with one another. You can pair one Mivi speaker with another and use them as a stereo pair. You don’t even need to have the same speaker model. For instance, we made a stereo pair using the Octave and Moonstone and it worked perfectly. The only thing lacking is multi-device connectivity and they don’t have a built-in microphone for voice calls.
As a first attempt, all three offerings from Mivi are impressive. The stand-out feature is the stereo pairing which gives them an edge over other budget competition. When it comes to pricing, there is aggressive competition from existing and established brands like Boat, JBL, Portronics and Tagg.

One of the most popular hacks of Netflix is password sharing. If you are on the Rs 800 plan, four different people can use the service, irrespective of device and location (it allows four simultaneous streams). This is good for a family sharing point of view but Netflix had no way of identifying or stopping misuse. Some new software announced at CES could potentially stop this hack. The Orwellian AI system developed by Synamedia analyses geolocation data and can identify if an account is being shared with multiple users. The software is also capable of identifying repeat streams of a particular programme (to identify use in public places where groups of people are present). Netflix might demand a premium from these shared account users and deactivate their accounts for non-compliance. In other news, they might also be raising the Rs 800/month plan to Rs 999 while the Rs 650/ month might go up to Rs 800 (reports suggest they need the money to pay for better and more Netflix original content).

Canon made a late entry in the mirrorless camera segment but that doesn’t mean it is holding back on development. While most mirrorless cameras are offering full HD or 4K video, a Canon spokesperson recently confirmed that the brand is working on 8K mirrorless. The camera will be part of the EOS R series, first launched in 2018. The spokesperson also said that apart from the camera, they are also working on making their lenses better for video capture. If Canon is able to get this to market first, it might help them take an early lead with certain types of content creators.

The older battery cases from Apple were not very well received: the massive bump made them ungainly and unbalanced. This time around, the cases for the XR, XS & XS Max are much more svelte. They have a high-quality lithium polymer battery inside that greatly extends the battery life of your device. They also support wireless charging and come in black or white. Speaking of wireless charging, the delayed AirPower charging case (which can purportedly charge a phone, AirPods and Apple Watch simultaneously) is in production according to several sources. Rumors suggest that it is being manufactured by Luxshare Precision, the same company that makes the AirPods for Apple.

Hard to believe, but it’s the truth — a simple photo of an egg is the most liked image on Instagram with a massive 38 million likes. A few days ago, the most liked picture on Instagram belonged to socialite Kylie Jenner (who is also the 7th most followed celebrity on the social network). Kylie’s post had her newborn daughter and received 18 million likes. On 4th January, an account posted the image of the egg with the open aim of breaking the record of the most liked picture on Instagram. The account went viral with multiple shares across social media as well as a number of articles. Within just 10 days, the egg broke Kylie’s record continues to amass likes at the time of writing. Unfortunately, you’ll be seeing a lot of eggs online because it has also led to a number of copycat accounts and posts.

YouTube has introduced a new swipe based navigation feature on iOS. So far, to switch between your video list, you have to tap the next or previous button. After the update, you can just swipe left or right to play the next or previous video (previous video will start playback from where you left off). This makes it easier to navigate and pushes you to consume more content. The feature will be rolling out to iOS users in the next week while Android users will have to wait for some time (no confirmations on the Android update yet, which is ironic because Google owns both YouTube and Android).
