This monsoon season, pack your bags and book a trip to Uttarakhand. Reason? The magnificent snow lotus, locally known as the Brahma Kamal, will be in full bloom from July to September. If you are wondering what is so special about a flower, then let us tell you that the snow lotus is one of the rarest flowers that grows all year in the harshest winter conditions in high and extreme temperatures of the Himalayas, at an altitude of approximately 3,700–4,600 metres, only to bloom once before it withers away.

All about snow lotus

The snow lotus withstands low temperatures, windiness, and reduced oxygen to unfurl its petals, sometimes taking as long as 8 years to reveal its purple bloom, as per a report by The Better India. It has adapted to its environment due to certain characteristics, such as the woolly covering, enabling the flower to store heat and protect itself from icy winds. This is one of the many reasons why the snow lotus takes its time to grow, saving its energy in nutrient-deficient soil environments.

The snow lotus can blossom up to eight inches in diameter and remain in full bloom for only a few hours. Named after Lord Brahma, it is considered to be a symbol of good luck and prosperity, which unfurls only in sunset. For those wishing to witness the beauty of the snow lotus, here are the top 5 places you must visit in Uttarakhand.

Places to see snow lotus

Valley of Flowers: If there’s one place that truly celebrates Himalayan blooms, it’s this UNESCO-listed valley. Starting from Govindghat via Ghangaria, the trek is beginner-friendly. Come monsoon, the landscape bursts into colour, and the rare Brahma Kamal quietly stands out. Think cool breezes, river sounds, and postcard-perfect peaks all around.

Kedarnath: Beyond its spiritual pull, Kedarnath offers a chance to spot Brahma Kamal in its natural habitat. At over 11,000 feet, the terrain supports its growth. Visit between August and September, and you might see these sacred blooms dotting rocky slopes, often picked by pilgrims as offerings, blending faith with nature beautifully.

Hemkund Sahib: Set at a staggering altitude, Hemkund Sahib is as serene as it is scenic. The steep trek is challenging but worth every step. During the monsoon, the surrounding meadows come alive with alpine flowers, including Brahma Kamal. Add to that a शांत gurudwara and glacial lake, and the experience feels almost meditative.

Roopkund trek: Known for its mysterious skeletal lake, the Roopkund trail also surprises with bursts of floral beauty. As you climb higher past Bedni Bugyal, you’ll spot Brahma Kamal growing along rugged ridges. It’s a striking contrast featuring delicate blooms against harsh terrain. Ideal for trekkers looking for both thrill and natural wonder.

Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve: For those who prefer offbeat trails, this biosphere reserve is a hidden gem. Rich in biodiversity, it’s one of the few places where Brahma Kamal blooms in quieter, less-crowded zones. Some areas need permits, but the untouched landscapes, rare flora, and peaceful vibe make it a rewarding escape into the wild.
