Mirzapur The Movie finally hit theatres on Friday (September 4). The film has largely opened to positive reviews, with critics and audiences praising the performances of Pankaj Tripathi and the rest of the cast. Directed by Gurmeet Singh, the film has also put pressure on Yash-starrer Toxic, which has witnessed a sharp drop at the box office.

The much-awaited film marks the big-screen debut of the popular Mirzapur franchise, which has built a massive following through its streaming series. With Pankaj Tripathi returning as Kaleen Bhaiya, along with Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi, expectations were high even before the film arrived in theatres.

Going by the opening-day numbers, the franchise has managed to turn that online popularity into theatrical interest. According to Sacnilk, Mirzapur The Movie collected Rs 24.75 crore net in India on Day 1, across 11,135 shows. Its India gross collection stood at Rs 29.70 crore.


The opening is particularly noteworthy because the film has managed to cross the Rs 25 crore mark in gross collections despite facing competition from other major releases. The positive response to the performances could also help the film maintain momentum over the weekend.

Pankaj Tripathi has once again emerged as one of the biggest attractions. His portrayal of Kaleen Bhaiya has been one of the most popular elements of the franchise, and the theatrical release appears to have brought his loyal audience to cinemas.

Beats Saiyaara and Awarapan 2 on opening day

The opening becomes more impressive when compared with some of the recent Hindi hits. Mirzapur The Movie has outgrossed Saiyaara, which opened at around Rs 22 crore, as well as Awarapan 2, which recorded an opening of approximately Rs 21.50 crore.

A Rs 25 crore-plus opening has traditionally been associated with Bollywood's biggest stars and major pan-India names. The performance of Mirzapur The Movie therefore gives Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and the rest of the ensemble an interesting box-office milestone.

The film also benefits from the familiarity of its characters. Unlike a completely new theatrical property, Mirzapur The Movie arrives with an established fan base that already knows the world, characters and conflicts. That familiarity appears to have translated into strong interest on the first day.

The film is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment. Gurmeet Singh, who has been associated with the Mirzapur universe, has directed the movie, while Puneet Krishna has written it. Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have produced the film under the Excel Entertainment banner, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers.

Toxic sees another slow day at the box office

While Mirzapur The Movie has started its theatrical journey on a strong note, Toxic continues to struggle with its collections. The Yash-starrer recorded only Rs 1.29 crore on Day 11, according to the figures provided by Sacnilk, from 1,747 shows.

The film had a very different start. Toxic arrived in theatres amid considerable buzz, with the makers organising several major promotional events ahead of its release. It also opened with more than Rs 100 crore, creating strong expectations for its theatrical run.

However, the film's opening was followed by a steep fall in collections from the second day. Mixed-to-disappointing reviews and negative word-of-mouth appear to have affected its momentum, making it difficult for the film to maintain the pace of its opening.

So far, Toxic has collected Rs 287.22 crore in India. The film is reportedly made on a budget of more than Rs 500 crore, making its theatrical performance a closely watched one.

Meanwhile, Mirzapur The Movie has several familiar faces returning from the series. Along with Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu, the cast includes Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur and Shweta Tripathi.

The film also introduces changes to the cast. Jitendra Kumar takes over the role of Bablu Pandit, previously played by Vikrant Massey, while Ravi Kishan joins the franchise as a new character. With the film now entering its first weekend, its Saturday and Sunday numbers will reveal whether the strong opening can turn into a sustained theatrical run.
