According to The Verge, unlike its outdated predecessor, this new platform, which complements the primary Microsoft Store app, offers users a seamless experience, allowing them to search for apps and games with direct links to the Microsoft Store client on Windows 10 or Windows 11 devices for quick and convenient downloads.
To achieve this, Microsoft has embraced modern technologies, using frameworks like Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a C# ASPNET backend.
Microsoft engineer Judah Gabriel, taking to X, emphasised the company's objective to create a fresh user experience, stating, "We created a fresh user experience with a thoughtfully designed interface, easier ways to discover new apps, and a modern web tech stack. I hope folks will find it useful."
This move marks a departure from the outdated React codebase, enhancing the platform's functionality and user interface.
This store, expected to launch in early 2024, reflects Microsoft's move to adapt to changing market dynamics, especially as regulatory developments, like the EU's Digital Markets Act, could necessitate the opening up of mobile app stores.
The web-based Microsoft Store functions as a complementary component to the main Microsoft Store app, seamlessly integrating with Windows devices.
Gabriel clarified, "Think of this as the web front to the app store on Windows. They work together," as per The Verge.
