Micromax to roll out Lollipop update for Canvas series of smartphones

NEW DELHI: Home-bred smartphone maker Micromax Tuesday said that it will be rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its popular Canvas series of smartphones.

The Canvas Xpress A99 smartphone will be the first device in the portfolio to receive the latest update, the company said.

“As a brand, we are committed to keeping our customers delighted with best in class technologies and experience. Riding on the same thought, we are today rolling out the Android L update with Canvas Xpress, making the overall user experience more efficient and seamless,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.

Micromax said that the update will be rolled out via OTA (over the air).

Micromax Canvas Hue review: Pick it for great design & battery

On first look, most people can easily confuse the Canvas Hue with the Apple iPhone.

It has the same rounded edges with a metal finish around the rim and remarkably similar overall look.

Even the camera placement on the rear is at the same location - however the Micromax logo and the speaker grill at the bottom gives it away.

The rear panel hides the dual microSIM slots, microSD slot and the non-removable 3000mAh battery.

One good thing is that even with a 3,000mAh battery, the phone does not feel bulky.

What we did not like is the placement of power button above the volume button - the placement led to us pressing the volume up button instead of the power button during usage.

Most users will take some time to get used to it.

Canvas Hue is one of the cheapest smartphone to come with an amoled display.

The amoled panel shows rich colors, sharp details and has great viewing angles.

Brightness level is excellent and the phone display was easy to read even under direct sunlight. Micromax has used Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the display from scratches.

However the rear glossy panel is prone to scratches - within a few days of usage there were visible marks.

You get a quad core processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage - as usual with majority of the phones in the same price bracket.

In day to day usage, we had no issues with the phone's performance - navigation was quick, full HD videos played without a hiccup and even switching between running apps was smooth.

However, in gaming the phone has issues playing high-end ones like Asphalt and Dead Trigger 2.

While the phone was able to run the games, we saw random frame drops during the gameplay.

With more than 5 apps running in the background, the phone's UI also starts to show sluggishness - again due to limited amount of free RAM available.

User interface of the Micromax Canvas Hue is different from the usual Micormax phones.

There is no app drawer - all icons are placed on the home screen and you can customize the icons and colors with various themes. Micromax has preloaded various apps including Clean Master, Opera mini, True caller, Swiftkey keyboard and Dr Safety.

There are additional features such as smart answer (raise phone to answer), pocket mode, smart call (automatic switch from loudspeaker to in-ear speaker) along with smart reminder.

For the price, the Canvas hue is an impressive offering from Micromax, but the 1GB RAM is the limiting factor.

For a lower price you can look at the Asus Zenfone 5 that comes with 2GB RAM and offer better performance.
