Why Are Wind Turbine Blades Difficult To Recycle?
Wind turbines are often described as a clean source of energy, but their huge blades create a difficult waste problem. A typical blade can be around 170 feet long, while newer offshore turbines can have blades almost twice that length. They are built to survive harsh weather for roughly 20 years, making them strong but hard to disassemble.The US Department of Energy says around 85% to 90% of a wind turbine's mass can already be commercially recycled. Much of the remaining material is fibre-reinforced composite, including fibreglass and carbon-fibre materials used in blades. Aubryn Cooperman, a wind energy analyst at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory, explained to Scientific American that the blades are difficult to move and disassemble because they are both extremely large and designed to last for decades.
Scientists Created A Resin With Its Second Life In Mind
The Michigan State team, led by chemical engineer John Dorgan, experimented with a new resin made by combining a plant-derived polymer with a synthetic material. Glass fibres are placed into the resin to create a strong composite material that could potentially be used for turbine blades. The interesting part comes when the material reaches the end of its useful life. Researchers can dissolve the resin, separate the glass fibres and recover materials that can be used again. Dorgan said the team had “specifically designed a system with the end of life in mind.”From Turbine Blades To Gummy Bears
One of the most surprising demonstrations involved food. Chemical treatment of the resin produced potassium lactate, a food ingredient used as a preservative. Researchers purified it and used it to make gummy bears. Dorgan even ate the candy produced during the experiment. The Guardian reported his explanation that the researchers had recovered food-grade potassium lactate and used it to make the sweets. But this does not mean people are currently eating candy made from old wind turbines. The gummy bears demonstrated what the new resin system could potentially achieve. The same process could also produce PMMA, commonly known as plexiglass, which is used in products such as windows and car taillights. Another chemical route can create a super-absorbent material used in diapers.The Goal Is Bigger Than Candy
The researchers' real goal is to make wind-turbine materials valuable enough to recycle instead of treating them as waste. Ars Technica reported that the resin could potentially be used for products ranging from car taillights and kitchen sinks to diapers and new turbine blades. There is also renewed research into recyclable blade materials in 2026. A study published in Materials Circular Economy found that recycled thermoplastic and glass-fibre materials could reduce environmental impacts compared with virgin materials. Its modelling estimated that blades made using recycled materials could have up to 27% lower cradle-to-gate global warming potential than blades made with conventional epoxy resin and new glass fibre.A Different Future For Retired Wind Turbines
The wind industry is now exploring several ways to give retired blades a second life. The US Department of Energy is supporting technologies to recover materials from old blades, including processes that can return recovered fibreglass to new blades and other products. The gummy bear experiment may sound unusual, but that is precisely what makes it interesting. The bigger idea is that a material designed to produce renewable energy does not necessarily have to become waste when its first job is finished.
