Michelle Obama reasserts right to bare arms
While US President Barack Obama surprised the audience by mentioning the hot topic of gun control only once in his last State of the Union address this week, one prominent American was far more forthright when it came to asserting the fundamental right to bare arms: First Lady Michelle Obama. Those deadly un(up)holstered arms also reiterated the key line in the second amendment stating that the right shall not be "infringed". So, the sleeveless, marigold-coloured wool-crepe dress by Ms Obama’s favourite Cuban-American designer Narciso Rodriguez hit the spot on many counts. Indeed, from the very outset, the Obama presidency has been replete with the First Lady’s unequivocal espousal of this right — regardless of the weather — leading to a resurgence of this phenomenon across the US.

So, it is not surprising that in their last year at the White House, at least one Obama will make no belated attempt to cover up, especially with more than just the gun control debate keeping temper(ature)s high in the US and elsewhere. And it is evident that with arms so visible in the highest echelons — vice-president Joe Biden’s wife Jill has had hers on display too at many important occasions — it will take more than just executive action to get Americans to sheathe their arms, even if for the greater public good.
