The dress code for the Met Gala 2026 is finally out, and as expected, it has already started conversations across the fashion world. The theme this year is “Fashion Is Art.” The announcement was shared by Vogue, confirming what guests will be interpreting when they walk the famous steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 4.

The Met Gala, held every year in New York City, is not just another red carpet event. It marks the opening of the annual spring exhibition at the museum’s Costume Institute. For 2026, that exhibition is titled “Costume Art.” The dress code directly connects to it.

What ‘Fashion Is Art’ Really Points To

This year’s exhibition, “Costume Art,” will focus on the idea of the “dressed body” and how clothing has shaped and reflected the human form across centuries. Around 400 objects are expected to be displayed. These include garments, archival fashion pieces, paintings, sculptures, and artworks drawn from nearly 5,000 years of history. The exhibition will be presented in the museum’s new Condé M. Nast Galleries, located near the Great Hall.

The dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” leaves the interpretation wide open. Instead of answering whether fashion qualifies as art, the theme almost assumes it does. The focus shifts to how clothing becomes a living expression on the body.

According to the Associated Press, Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, proposed the flexible brief to encourage maximum creativity. He said, “Hopefully, it will put an end to the rather obsolete ‘Is Fashion Art?’ debate once and for all.”

When Vogue revealed the announcement on social media, it explained the intention clearly. The caption read: “On Monday, May 4, guests at the 2026 #MetGala will celebrate ‘Costume Art,’ the spring exhibition at the @MetMuseum’s @MetCostumeInstitute. But what will they wear? The Met Gala dress code for this year is ‘Fashion is Art,’ inviting guests to express their own relationship to fashion as an embodied artform.”

What Can We Expect on the Red Carpet?

Because the brief is so open, the red carpet could go in many directions. Designers may draw inspiration from ancient civilisations, Renaissance portraits, modern sculpture, or even futuristic design ideas. Some may revisit retro silhouettes and rework them with an avant-garde approach. Others might lean into sculptural metallic drapes, painterly textures, or experimental tailoring.

Historically, Met Gala themes influence trends far beyond the event itself. Bridal couture, runway collections, editorial fashion shoots, and even luxury retail often reflect what debuts on those museum steps. This year, conceptual and art-driven dressing may find stronger ground in mainstream fashion.

Co-Chairs and Host Committee

The 2026 edition will be led by an impressive group of co-chairs. These include Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, tennis legend Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, who continues her long-standing role in shaping the gala.

The host committee will be co-chaired by designer Anthony Vaccarello and actor Zoë Kravitz. Several names from music, film, sports, and fashion are also expected to attend, although the full guest list remains confidential as always.
