When asked about reports claiming Gates had multiple affairs while he was married to French, the philanthropist said those were the questions the co-founder of Microsoft needed to answer.
Melinda French married Bill Gates in 1994. The two, who were known as the power couple that gave back to the world, announced their split in May 2021 after 27 years of being married.

The news shocked the world of business and philanthropy alike, and made headlines everywhere as reports about ongoing tension in the couple's marriage that led to their eventual separation circulated. The 66-year-old tech titan's friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein also came under the scanner. As did reports of Gates having had an affair with another woman - a Microsoft staff member - while he was married to French, which he admitted later publicly. In March 2021, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Microsoft board became aware in 2019 that a Microsoft engineer penned a letter alleging that she and Gates had a sexual relationship over the years.

Months after their official separation, French is finally opening up about her divorce from the Microsoft co-founder. In an interview with CBS Mornings' Gayle King that was aired on Thursday night in the United States, the 57-year-old reflected on her divorce and the factors that precipitated it, in a way.

Admitting that there were "a lot of issues and not just one thing" that led to the divorce, the Duke University alumna said that she thought that as a couple they would be able to work through issues. However, there came a point in their marriage where she realised that she couldn't trust what they had. And Epstein's continued friendship with Gates was one of the reasons, she acknowledged.

French, who is one of the wealthiest women in the world, didn't support Gates's friendship with Epstein and had made it clear to him that she didn't like their interaction.

"As I said, it's not one thing, it was many things. But I did not like that he'd had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no," French told King.

Out of curiosity, French even met Epstein herself to see "who this man was" and regretted it the second she stepped inside the door.

"He was abhorrent. He was evil personified. I had nightmares about it afterwards. So, you know, my heart breaks for these young women, because that's how I felt, and here I'm an older woman. My god, I feel terrible for those young women. It was awful," the philanthropist added.

When asked about reports claiming that Gates had multiple affairs while he was married to French, she said those were the questions the co-founder of Microsoft needed to answer.

French really thought she was going to stay married to Gates till death, as per their wedding vows. So the divorce, which French started seeking since 2019, broke her. For days, the 57-year-old grieved a lost of something she thought she "had for a lifetime".

"I had a lot of tears for many days, days where I'm literally on the floor ... thinking, 'How can this be? How can I get up? How am I going to move forward?" French said.

Their divorce was finally finalised in August 2021.

Gates, 65, summed it up like this in a 2019 Netflix documentary series: "In the case of Melinda, it is truly an equal partner."

"She's a lot like me in that she is optimistic and she is interested in science. She is better with people than I am. She's a tiny bit less hard core about knowing, you know, immunology, than I am." Born October 28, 1955, William H. Gates grew up in Seattle and fell in love with machines and computer programming as a geeky-looking 13-year-old. He left Harvard University after two years to start "Micro-soft," a software company, with a childhood friend.

On the other side of the country, Melinda Gates was born Melinda French on August 15, 1964 in Dallas, Texas. The first computer she ever used was an Apple II, and she developed an interest in computer games and programming at school.

The couple met in 1987, shortly after Melinda started working at Microsoft as a product manager, her first job after graduating from Duke University.

The pair ended up sitting next to each other at a business dinner and hit it off. Melinda, now 56, described her future husband in the Netflix documentary as "funny and very high-energy." But Bill didn't ask her out until a few months later, when they bumped into each other in the Microsoft parking lot. He asked her on a date -- in two weeks.

Melinda teased him for not being "spontaneous enough" and told him to call her closer to the date. A few hours later, he called her at home and asked her out for that night.

The couple's divorce could create new questions about their wealth, most of which has yet to be donated to their foundation. Bill transitioned away from Microsoft in 2006 to focus more on philanthropy.

In 2010, he and Melinda, along with Warren Buffett, created the Giving Pledge, which encourages billionaires to give the majority of their wealth to charity. Initially, Bill wrote the foundation's annual newsletter, but Melinda asked to co-author it in 2013. Although they argued about the idea -- to the point that Melinda said in her 2019 memoir she thought their marriage would end because of it -- they ultimately compromised.

The 2013 letter included just a section by Melinda. They co-authored the letter the next year, but Bill wrote most of it. By 2015, it was a true joint venture.
