Martin Scorsese's Bollywood debut confirmed: Director joins Karan Johar's movie starring Janhvi Kapoor-Ishaan Khatter

Acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese is officially stepping into Bollywood as an executive producer for Neeraj Ghaywan’s upcoming film Homebound. The project, backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, will have its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

The announcement came when Karan Johar shared the news on Instagram, featuring a note written by Scorsese himself. In the note, the Wolf of Wall Street director expressed his admiration for Ghaywan’s work, stating, "I have seen Neeraj's first film Masaan in 2015 and I loved it. So when Melita Toscan du Plantier sent me the project of his second film, I was curious. I loved the story, the culture, and was willing to help. Neeraj has made a beautifully crafted film that's a significant contribution to Indian Cinema. I am glad the movie is an official selection at Un Certain Regard in Cannes this year."

A Major Milestone for Indian Cinema

Neeraj Ghaywan, overwhelmed by the collaboration, took to social media to share his feelings. He wrote, "(It) is an honour beyond words. I'm deeply grateful to our co-producer Melita Toscan, who introduced us to him. Mr. Scorsese mentored us through the screenplay and multiple rounds of editing. He listened with care, understood the cultural context, and offered thoughtful, incisive notes each time. Karan Johar also highlighted the significance of Scorsese's involvement. Posting on Instagram, he remarked, "Homebound is an extraordinary confluence of talent, vision, and storytelling at its finest. Having @martinscorsese_ , a true legend of cinema, lend his wisdom and support to Neeraj’s remarkable vision elevates our film to a rare artistic height. With an incredibly gifted cast and the prestigious stage of Cannes, we eagerly look forward to sharing Homebound’s powerful story with audiences around the world!"

Storyline and Cast of Homebound

The plot of Homebound revolves around two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who aspire to secure police jobs, offering them long-denied dignity. However, their journey becomes complicated as desperation begins to strain their deep-rooted bond.

The film features Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa in key roles. Co-written by Neeraj Ghaywan and Sumit Roy, Homebound promises to deliver a powerful narrative centered on hope, ambition, and friendship.

Besides Dharma Productions, the movie is co-produced by Mélita Toscan du Plantier, who had previously collaborated with Ghaywan on Masaan. Producers Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Somen Mishra, and Marijke deSouza are also part of the production team.

Industry and Fan Reactions

The announcement sparked excitement across the film industry and among movie enthusiasts. Designer Manish Malhotra commented, "Wowwwww congratulations," while actor Vikrant Massey posted a heart and evil eye emoji. Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar celebrated the news with heart and fire emojis.

Though this marks his formal debut in Bollywood, Martin Scorsese has previously engaged with Indian cinema. His World Cinema Project under The Film Foundation has been involved in restoring classic Indian films, including the 1977 Kannada film Ghatashraddha, which was showcased at the Venice Classics last year.
