MarQ LED Smart Android TV review: Ultra-thin bezels, excellent display

It is one of the cheapest 43-inch official Android TV available.

The MarQ TV features a 43-inch ADS LCD panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Price: Rs 21.999 (43SAFHD)
Rating:

Within two years, smartphone screens have gone from 16:9 aspect ratios with thick bezels to 19.5:9 aspect ratios with superthin bezels. Even with TVs, this is fast catching on. We saw the affordable MiTV with slim bezels last year and every brand is doing the same. MarQ, a brand owned by Flipkart, is taking things to the next level with a new 43-inch smart TV that boasts of the slimmest bezels yet.

To be fair, there is always a difference when it comes to the bezel shown in advertising compared to real life. MarQ TV uses the same trick but the bezels are sleeker compared to other TVs. It’s about half as thick compared to what you get on competing brands. The ultra-thin bezel adds to the overall appeal and helps deliver a more immersive experience.

The MarQ TV features a 43-inch ADS LCD panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. ADS or Advanced plane-to-line Switching panels are similar to IPS panels but are capable of slightly better contrast ratios. This is visible only when you compare the panels side by side. We tested with with a TataSky HD box, Amazon FireTV stick, USB playback as well as streaming over various video streaming services. We found the display performance to be excellent across usage scenarios. Apart from the high contrast and deep blacks, it also impressed us with wide viewing angles and rich colour. The only issue is that you can get a 43-inch 4K TV for just Rs 2k more. Choosing between higher resolution vs a sleeker bezel is a no brainer. When in doubt, be future proof with the higher resolution.

In terms of audio, you get 2 x 10W RMS speakers. Volume level is loud enough for a large room and while clarity is good, we felt that bass was missing. There is support for DTS TruSurround and Dolby Digital too which helps deliver a more natural sounding output without sacrificing on clarity. You also have an optical audio port on the back to connect additional speakers/soundbars.

You get YouTube, Hotstar and Chromecast built-in, so you can stream content via your smartphone to the TV when required.

We found the smart TV functionality lacking. On the plus side, it is Google certified Android TV, has Android 8.0 and the hardware is capable enough for smooth navigation and app use. However, there is no Amazon Prime Video or Netflix available. Even after side-loading these apps, they did not work. Bluetooth helps while using a wireless keyboard/mouse or headphones with the TV.

Thankfully, you get YouTube, Hotstar and Chromecast built-in, so you can stream content via your smartphone to the TV when required. Another disappointing factor was the lack of Bluetooth connectivity on the TV.

We liked the sleek and stylish remote which has a microphone and a dedicated button for Google Assistant voice control. However, the remote lacks air-mouse functionality which would have been a welcome addition. Overall, this new MarQTV from Flipkart will definitely add style to your home and is one of the cheapest 43-inch official Android TV available today. However, keep in mind that the Vu Iconium 4k Smart TV (Rs 25k) or the Kodak Ultra HD Smart TV (Rs 24k) are also available in the market. Both of them have 4k panels with support for Netflix (although they are Google certified Android TVs).

A 4K TV that rolls up is going to be very expensive and of course look good in your living room. A TV that is there when you want it and disappears when you don’t. This is the kind of product that blends-in with the aesthetics of your home. It drops slowly and steadily into the base and, with the push of a button, rises back up in about 10 seconds.
