There has been a steady increase in women making big spends. Yet marketing to this prime segment is often patronizing by offering ‘pink’ or ‘lighter and smaller’ versions of the same products.

Research has shown that a significant percentage of women fi nd the marketing efforts made towards them cringeworthy. To change this, marketers need to understand women consumers better, and for that, they need to listen to them more often.

In my opinion, marketing to women is evolving slowly and steadily. While some brands are sticking to the tried and tested ‘pink it’ strategy, some brands are breaking out of that motion and targeting people not basis the gender but basis other factors.

Marketing needs to cater to the woman of today who has equal amounts of grit and aspiration to accomplish tough tasks. The whole emphasis on femininity by pink is appalling. We women need not be stereotyped.

Marketing to women in India is still revolving around the ‘pink it’ framework. Half a billion population can’t be boxed by a typical marketing strategy being chased for ages. A shift in mindset is the need of the hour.
