ALBANY (US): The man who gunned down John Lennon outside his Manhattan apartment in 1980 was denied parole for an 11th time, state corrections officials said Wednesday. Mark David Chapman was denied after being interviewed by a parole board Aug. 19, according to corrections officials. Chapman, 65, is serving a 20-years-to-life sentence at Wende Correctional Facility, east of Buffalo.

Chapman shot and killed the former Beatle on the night of Dec. 8, 1980, hours after Lennon autographed an album for him. He has said previously that he feels "more and more shame" every year for the crime.

"I was too far in," Chapman told a parole board in 2018. "I do remember having the thought of, 'Hey, you have got the album now. Look at this, he signed it, just go home.' But there was no way I was just going to go home."

Chapman's next parole hearing is scheduled for August 2022.

The students were primarily protesting the asylum the US government had given to the Shah of Iran. The hostage crisis went on for 444 days, the longest in history. However, six diplomats evaded capture and took shelter in the Canadian embassy.

In August 2017, several employees of the American embassy in the Cuban capital of Havana said they had been hearing strange grating sounds for close to a year. Employees even reported hearing and memory loss and nausea because of the sounds. There were allegations of the Cuban government using sonic weapons to target the US citizens. Cuba, on its part, said the sounds were a result of the stridulation of Jamaican field crickets. The possibility of mass psychogenic illness was also suggested. Nothing was proven, and the US government reduced its staffing to a minimum.

In a hilarious diplomatic faux pas this October, the US consulate in Canberra, Australia, sent out invitation cards via an email to an unknown number of people. On these cards was the picture of a cat wearing a blue cookie monster outfit holding a plate of cookies. The card was titled “cat pyjama-jam”. Soon after, the embassy issued a public apology, relegating the email to an error on the part of trainees and jokingly said that organising such a party was outside their area of expertise.

In January 2010, two German federal police officers were flown back to their home country from the consulate in Tehran after the Iranian government alleged that a woman they both had an affair with was “close” to the opposition. German media stated the event had been politicised because Germany had supported sanctions against Iran at the UN to put a stopper on the country’s nuclear programme.
