Manchester City are comfortably on top of the Premier League table, 16 points above second placed Manchester United.

The teams still have nine matches to play, and one man guaranteed to be tracking this final stretch of the league is Mahela Jayawardena, a United diehard. The former Sri Lanka captain, however, knows sporting excellence when he sees it.

He gives credit to City and their renowned coach, Pep Guardiola, for their performance so far.

“We were scared that Pep would do the same magic at City (as at the earlier teams he coached),” Jayawardena said during a visit to Mumbai recently.

“I think it is hard for United to catch them now but I hope we can be in the top-4 so we can play the Champions League next year. And maybe add some players in the summer transfer window.” But it’s not over till the last game, and no one knows this better than Jayawardene, a veteran of several turnarounds on the field.
