A neighbourhood dispute over a fallen Neem tree and a damaged car has sparked intense debate online after a man claimed his neighbour demanded Rs 72,000 in compensation following a storm. What made the story stand out for many social media users was not just the damage itself, but the fact that the neighbour had reportedly parked his car under the same tree for years to enjoy its shade. The incident has now triggered larger conversations about responsibility, insurance, natural disasters, and where exactly neighbourly obligations should begin and end.

The viral account was shared on X by social media user Ankit Pandey, who described how a massive storm caused an old neem tree located within his family’s property boundary to collapse onto a neighbouring car parked beside their wall.

According to Ankit, the vehicle suffered heavy damage after the tree came crashing down during the storm. He explained that immediately after the incident, his family removed the fallen tree from the neighbour’s side and cleared the area as quickly as possible. However, the situation escalated the very next morning.

Ankit claimed the neighbour arrived carrying a service center estimate of Rs 72,000 and demanded complete compensation for the damage caused to the car. What frustrated him further, he said, was the fact that the neighbour had allegedly parked the car under that same tree every day for years because he wanted the shade it provided. Despite severe storm conditions and strong winds on the day of the incident, the neighbour still chose to leave the car parked beneath the tree, according to Ankit’s version of events.

He also claimed that the neighbour already had Zero Dep insurance coverage for the vehicle but instead of filing an insurance claim, he began insisting that the family personally pay for the repair costs. Ankit said he clearly explained to the neighbour that the incident was caused by a natural storm and not by intentional negligence or deliberate action. According to him, he suggested that the neighbour use his insurance policy to cover the damages instead. The disagreement reportedly became increasingly heated afterwards.

Ankit alleged that the neighbour grew angry, contacted the police, repeatedly argued over compensation, and even demanded that at least half the amount be paid by the family. He further claimed that the neighbour later started telling people in the locality that they were “goons” because they refused to compensate him for what they considered a natural disaster.

The matter eventually reached local police officials, who, according to Ankit, described the incident as a natural occurrence and advised both parties to settle the issue mutually. The social media user ended his post with a pointed observation about how people often enjoy benefits during good times but shift responsibility during losses.

He remarked that some individuals happily take advantage of things like free shade when convenient, but the moment nature causes damage, they suddenly expect neighbours to function like insurance companies. The incident has since gone viral online, with users divided over who should bear responsibility in such situations.

The post quickly sparked strong reactions online, with many users siding with Ankit Pandey in the dispute. Several people argued that a “No Parking” sign near the tree might have avoided confusion and future conflict. Others criticised what they described as a growing sense of entitlement, saying the situation was a straightforward case of storm-related damage rather than deliberate negligence.

Some users were particularly surprised that the neighbour allegedly demanded compensation despite reportedly having vehicle insurance coverage. A few described the demand as unreasonable and excessive, especially since the incident occurred during severe weather conditions.

Many commenters also pointed out that natural disasters and storm damage are generally treated as unavoidable events rather than intentional acts. Others referred to the incident as an “Act of God,” arguing that no individual should be personally blamed for damage caused purely by nature. Several users felt the car owner should bear the repair expenses himself or simply file an insurance claim instead of escalating the dispute with neighbours.
