Malayalam film-maker Vijay Babu arrested over sexual assault case filed by actress

Malayalam actor and film-maker, Vijay Babu, who has been accused of sexually assaulting an actress, has been arrested by the Kerala Police. The actor was arrested following the complaint lodged by the actress. Reportedly, the police will commence an investigation into the matter and will soon begin collecting evidence.

Babu was apprehended immediately after he appeared for questioning at the Ernakulam South Police station. The High Court granted the actor bail, however, it directed that if the Kerala Police wanted to arrest him then he should be released on a bail with Rs 5 lakh bond along with two guarantors. The court has also granted the investigation team permission to question the actor on July 3 from 9 am to 6 pm.

There are also reports that suggest that the actor may be arrested again by the police. However, this time for revealing the survivor's name on social media. The actor was granted anticipatory bail by Kerala High Court on June 22, however, the court asked him not to leave the state.


Even before the arrest, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) announced in its general body meeting that no action will be taken against Babu till the court’s final judgment.

Meanwhile, Women Cinema Collective (WCC) heavily criticized AMMA for including Babu in the general body meeting. Actress Swetha Menon resigned from the Internal Complaints Committee in protest over the inclusion of Babu.

The actress who had appeared in movies produced by Babu filed a complaint on April 22. The survivor had detailed the physical and sexual assault by Babu in a lengthy Facebook post.
