Sukanya met Shankar in the 1970s and they got married in 1989.
Today marks the 100th birth anniversary of sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. To mark the century, his family, which includes wife Sukanya Shankar and daughter Anoushka Shankar, had planned a series of centennial concerts. Musicians Norah Jones (Shankar’s daughter from another relationship), Philip Glass and Dhani Harrison, were some of the artists to have been expected to take part to celebrate the occasions. Months, if not years, of planning had gone into this event.
But plans change.
The coronavirus has forced them to postpone the concerts. “How do you make God laugh? You tell him your plans!” says Sukanya.
But she believes that there is always a bigger plan in place. “I believe there is a reason for everything and we need to make the best of whatever happens. The good side is we are celebrating him quietly at home and will of course God willing, make alternate arrangements for the postponement of the shows.”
Sukanya, like most of us, is following the lockdown and staying at home amid fears of the rapid spreading of the virus. Currently in London with her daughter and grandchildren, Sukanya says that they’re all laying low at their home in London.
“Like everybody we are staying at home. I have not left the house for the last two weeks. Even though I have Anoushka and my grandsons with me, we keep a distance and I keep in touch with my family and friends on video calls.”

With the number of cases in the UK rising to over 50,000, Sukanya urges everyone to remain indoors. “My message to everyone: all of you be safe please.”

On the occasion of Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar's birth centenary, daughter Anoushka Shankar and wife Sukanya Shankar to pay a virtual tribute to his legacy and also entertain his fans across the globe.
