Make people remember you after every conversation: Try the 'Triangle Method' to assert confidence subconsciously for lasting impression

The ‘Triangle Method’ could change how you use eye contact

Sometimes, people remember how you made them feel during a conversation more than what you actually said. A confident voice helps, but there is another small detail that can change the way an interaction feels — eye contact. If staring directly into someone's eyes feels awkward or too intense, the so-called Triangle Method can offer an easier way to manage it without making the conversation look forced.

What is the Triangle Method?

The Triangle Method became popular on social media as a flirting technique, but the basic idea can also be useful in everyday conversations. The original version involves moving your gaze between one eye, the person's mouth and their other eye, creating an imaginary triangle across the face.

Psychology Today notes that the method has been widely promoted online, but there is no clinical evidence proving that it can make someone fall for you. The technique is better understood as a structured way of maintaining eye contact rather than a guaranteed trick for attraction.

The important part is not to stare at each point for too long. A long look at someone's mouth, for example, can quickly become uncomfortable. The movement should be slow and natural, rather than looking like you are following three points in a routine.

Why eye contact can make conversations feel different

There is some research behind the broader idea of using eye contact to create a stronger connection. A 2024 speed-dating study published in Archives of Sexual Behavior followed 60 participants across four speed dates each and used mobile eye-tracking to examine their gaze behaviour. Researchers found that people were more likely to choose partners with whom they shared more eye contact.

That does not mean the Triangle Method itself has been scientifically proven. The study looked at mutual eye contact, not this particular eye-mouth-eye routine. Still, it suggests that how much people look at each other can matter during a first interaction.

Vogue has also highlighted the Triangle Method as a recent social media trend, explaining how moving the gaze between the eyes and mouth can create a subtle signal of interest.

You can also use it outside flirting

The useful part of the technique does not have to involve dating at all. During a job interview, meeting, presentation or even a normal conversation with someone new, constantly staring into one eye can become tiring.

A professional variation is to move the gaze between the eyes and the brow or forehead area. American Express cites etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore describing the area between the forehead and eyes as the “business gaze.”

The idea is simple: maintain enough eye contact to show that you are paying attention, but give your eyes somewhere else to go for a moment.

Don't turn eye contact into a performance

One common mistake is trying so hard to use a technique that the conversation itself gets forgotten. Psychology Today makes a similar point, arguing that the Triangle Method can become mechanical if someone is consciously trying to follow every step.

A separate guide from Magnet ABA Therapy recommends the 50/70 rule — eye contact for around 50% of the time while speaking and 70% while listening, with roughly four to five seconds before looking away.

So, the real takeaway is less complicated than the name suggests. Use the Triangle Method as a reminder to vary your gaze, stay present and avoid looking nervous or distracted. The goal is not to hypnotise someone or manufacture attraction. It is simply to make your eye contact feel comfortable, confident and interested.
