Maharaja 2: Vijay Sethupathi confirms sequel, says he will act for free in Hollywood remake. Who is in the cast of Tamil movie Hollywood remake?

Vijay Sethupathi has finally confirmed that Maharaja 2 is in development. The actor revealed that director Nithilan Saminathan has already narrated the story of the sequel to him and that he was impressed by what he heard. Sethupathi also opened up about the Hollywood remake of the Tamil film and said he would be willing to act in the American version without charging a fee.

The actor shared the update while speaking at the audio launch of Baththa. According to Sethupathi, Nithilan Saminathan has already worked out the story for Maharaja 2 and narrated it to him.

Sethupathi praised the filmmaker's writing ability and said he had a great experience working with him on the first film. He described the sequel's story as “so beautiful” and expressed his excitement about collaborating with the director again.


The confirmation comes after months of speculation surrounding a possible follow-up to Maharaja. While there had been considerable interest in another chapter, the latest comments from Sethupathi indicate that the project has moved beyond just an early idea, with a story already in place.

What is Maharaja about?

Released in 2024, Maharaja is a Tamil neo-noir thriller directed by Nithilan Saminathan. Vijay Sethupathi plays the titular character, a barber who visits a police station to report that his dustbin has been stolen.

What initially appears to be a simple complaint soon develops into a much more complicated story. The film moves between different timelines and gradually reveals the reasons behind Maharaja's actions.

The movie also featured Anurag Kashyap in a negative role, along with Mamta Mohandas, Sachana Namidass and Natty Subramaniam. Its screenplay, performances and unexpected turns helped it attract attention beyond Tamil Nadu.

Maharaja's box-office success

Maharaja turned out to be one of Vijay Sethupathi's biggest commercial successes. Made on a reported budget of around Rs 20 crore, the film went on to collect close to Rs 200 crore worldwide.

Speaking about the film's unexpected reach, the actor said that he had always believed in the movie but did not imagine that it would become as successful as it eventually did.

The actor's comments also talks about how the film's success extended beyond its original theatrical market, eventually leading to interest from Hollywood.

Vijay Sethupathi wants to act in Hollywood remake for free

Producer Sudhan Sundaram recently told Vijay Sethupathi that the Hollywood rights to Maharaja had been sold to an agency.

The Tamil actor recalled telling the producer that, "He recently called me and told me that he has sold the Hollywood rights of the film. I told him, ‘I’ll act in one movie for free. Get me a role in that Hollywood remake. I’ll go to Hollywood! It gives me such a great surprise and happiness. I’ve always had a big interest in working in Hollywood, but more than anything, I’m extremely happy that my movie is going to Hollywood."

The Hollywood version is expected to feature an A-list actor and could reportedly go into production next year.

Is Matthew McConaughey in the Maharaja Hollywood remake?

Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey's name has been linked to the Hollywood adaptation, with reports suggesting that he could be considered for the lead role. However, his casting has not been officially confirmed.

Sundaram has previously said that McConaughey may be among the actors being discussed, but stressed that only the agency handling the project can officially announce the cast.

For now, therefore, there is no confirmed Hollywood cast for the Maharaja remake.

The original Maharaja featured Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role, with Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Sachana Namidass and Natty Subramaniam in key roles.

Nithilan Saminathan directed the film and also wrote the screenplay. B. Ajaneesh Loknath composed the music, while Dinesh Purushothaman handled cinematography and Philomin Raj edited the film. The movie was produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadish Palanisamy under Passion Studios, Think Studios and The Route.
