Madhuri Dixit Nene to star in Amazon's first original desi movie 'Maja Ma'

Bollywood superstar Madhuri Dixit Nene, who made her OTT debut with Netflix's web series 'The Fame Game' earlier this year, is all set to headline Amazon's first Indian original film on Prime Video.

Set for an October 6 premiere, the highly-anticipated movie will be directed by Anand Tiwari of 'Bandish Bandits' fame and written by Sumit Batheja.

Announcing the news on social media, Amazon Prime Video India shared the poster of the new film, featuring Bollywood's 'Dancing Diva'.


"The dancing diva is back and how! Blessing your screens to do away with your mid-week blues - now we're feeling 'Maja Ma'," the tweet read.


The upcoming family entertainer is set against the celebratory backdrop of a traditional festival and a quintessential, colourful Indian wedding. It will feature various unexpected twists and turns.

This is Tiwari's second project with Prime Video after the success of 'Bandish Bandits'.

The statement issued by the streaming giant said that the 'light-hearted' and 'thought-provoking' drama will see the 'Aaja Nachle' star in a never-seen-before role.

"Foraying into our original movie production here in India was a natural progression as we believe it opens up another avenue for us to super-serve our customers with immersive entertainment that delights and engages them. This movie is also special for us as it showcases a female protagonist and her strength of conviction, beautifully portrayed on screen by the Bollywood icon, Madhuri Dixit," Prime Video's Head of India Originals, Aparna Purohit, said in a statement.

'Maja Ma' is the first of many original Amazon films that will launch on the platform directly.

The upcoming movie also features stars such as Gajraj Rao, Ritwik Bhowmik, Barkha Singh, Srishti Shrivastava, Rajit Kapur, Sheeba Chaddha, Simone Singh, Malhar Thakar and Ninad Kamat.

The project has been bankrolled by Leo Media Collective and Amritpal Singh Bindra.
