Actor R. Madhavan is not only known for his work in films but also for his passion for growing food. The actor has been practising organic gardening at home and has grown several vegetables on his Mumbai terrace. He has also worked on turning dry land in Tamil Nadu into a coconut plantation. Madhavan first developed an interest in gardening around 2014, when he began growing vegetables and fruits in his balcony. For him, growing even one vegetable can help people understand the hard work that goes into farming.

How R Madhavan developed an interest in organic gardening

Madhavan’s interest in organic farming began when he had more time at home while working on a film script. In a 2017 interview with TOI, the actor spoke about why he decided to grow his own vegetables instead of depending entirely on produce available in the market.

He said concerns about the nutritional value of modern produce and the increasing use of genetic modification made him curious about growing food in a more natural way. Madhavan began reading about organic farming and slowly turned his research into a hands-on gardening project.

What started as a new hobby eventually became an important part of his lifestyle. The actor said, "I was working on a script and used to stay at home a lot. So, I used this time to read up on organic farming and I must say, it has been extremely rewarding. My terrace garden takes care of almost 70 per cent of my seasonal vegetables requirements. I use just about 1/20th of water that is usually needed through drip irrigation. Especially at times like this, when the state is reeling under the effects of the drought, this is a great way to sustain yourself."

From lady’s finger to broccoli, what Madhavan grows

Madhavan has experimented with several fruits and vegetables over the years. His home garden has included lady’s finger, aubergine, broccoli, tomatoes and cucumber, among other seasonal produce.

The actor has also spoken about his belief that people should try growing at least one vegetable themselves. His reasoning is simple: once someone experiences the process of preparing soil, planting seeds, watering plants and protecting crops, they can better understand the work farmers put in to produce food.

His approach to gardening is also closely connected to sustainability. Rather than treating a home garden simply as a decorative space, Madhavan has used it to grow food for his household while trying to conserve resources.

He has also ventured beyond terrace gardening. The actor worked on transforming dry, barren land in Tamil Nadu into a coconut plantation, showing that his interest in farming extends beyond growing a few plants at home.

Madhavan’s 7 steps to grow vegetables at home

For people who want to start their own vegetable garden, Madhavan has shared several basic tips based on his experience.

1. Start with organic soil: Madhavan recommends paying attention to the quality of soil before planting anything. He suggested sourcing relatively clean soil and mixing it with river-bed soil.

2. Choose organic seeds: The actor also stressed the importance of finding good-quality organic seeds. He recalled buying his first set of seeds from Europe, although some of the varieties were originally Indian.

3. Look for local sources: According to Madhavan, villagers and farmers may have stocks of organic seeds. People can also find suitable seeds online if they do not have access to local sources.

4. Give plants enough light: Once the seeds have been planted, adequate sunlight is essential. Madhavan advised gardeners to make sure their plants receive enough light.

5. Ensure proper airflow: Plants also need sufficient air circulation. A crowded or poorly ventilated space can make it harder for plants to grow properly.

6. Do not overwater: More water does not necessarily mean healthier plants. Madhavan advised beginners to avoid excessive watering and pay attention to what their plants actually need.

7. Protect young plants: New shoots can easily be damaged by rats and other pests. Madhavan suggested covering plants when they are just beginning to sprout so that they can grow safely.

For Madhavan, the reward of gardening goes beyond having fresh vegetables at home. His terrace farming experiment has allowed him to grow a substantial portion of his seasonal produce while using water carefully. His advice also shows that starting a vegetable garden does not necessarily require a large piece of land; a balcony or terrace can be enough to begin.

On the work front, Madhavan was recently seen in GDN, which did not perform strongly at the box office. Before that, he appeared in the blockbuster spy thriller Dhurandhar franchise, which emerged as one of the year's biggest hits.
