Mythological Horror Drama Maa Starring Kajol Arrives on Netflix
Kajol’s entry into the horror genre came earlier this year with Maa, a mythological thriller directed by Vishal Furia. The film, which earned her appreciation for her performance, combines supernatural elements with themes of maternal strength. It follows the story of Ambika, a woman who, along with her daughter, is drawn into a terrifying conflict after her husband’s mysterious death.

The plot unfolds as Ambika and her daughter travel to her late husband’s ancestral village in Chandrapur. What begins as a journey to settle property matters soon turns into a confrontation with sinister traditions and a curse tied to demonic forces. The film builds on religious symbolism while exploring the struggles of a mother fighting to protect her child.

Maa OTT Release Details

After its theatrical run, Maa is now headed to the digital space. Netflix India confirmed on Thursday that the film will begin streaming on the platform from August 22. The announcement was made through social media along with a poster and a caption highlighting the idea of a mother as a protector.

The project is backed by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Kumar Mangat Pathak under Jio Studios and Devgn Films. Alongside Kajol, the film stars Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma in significant roles. Saiwyn Quadras penned the screenplay, with Sandeep Francis handling the editing. The soundtrack was composed by Harsh Upadhyay, Rocky Khanna, and Shiv Malhotra.

Box Office and Reception

Maa recorded a domestic box office collection of Rs 36.08 crore. Reviews were mixed, with many critics praising Kajol’s screen presence while pointing out that the film played cautiously with its horror elements. Viewers noted that while the mythological backdrop was compelling, the execution leaned more towards drama than scares.
